anyone have a canon g9?

How well does it fit in your pocket? I'm probably buying this camera for underwater photography on my trip. I wish I could get something even smaller (for when I don't want to lug around a dslr on land) but I need RAW capability since I don't want to mess around with WB when I'm diving.

It's sort of anoying that I even have to buy this camera, but it would cost me 3k to equip my dslr for underwater action. The cheapest UW housing for the e-3 is almost as expensive as the e-3 itself. Why does every activity I chose to partake in have to be so expensive?

Three people in my family have this camera. They really really like the pics it produces. Though it is a fairly thick camera. So I say no pockets unless they are deep/you dont mind a big rectangular bulge. You could always get a SD1100is and put the hacked firmware with raw mode on an SD and use that, its way smaller. Then again with that waterproof case you are talkin a lot of space anyway.

Damn. I didn't know about the firmware hacks for canon. The particular camera you listed doesn't have a housing, but i'm gonna check for one that does and then check the actual reviews to see if it's any good. The G9 is actually the perfect underwater compact, but if i don't have to make too many compromises, I could go with the other ones (RAW is a biggie shooting underwater).

FWIW, the size of the waterproof housing isn't a concern. I'll only be using it when I go diving. The reason I'd like a very small camera is because I'm stuck buying a new camera anyway, and if i'm buying another new camera, I might as well get one fits a use that the e-3 and e-330 do not. It would be good to have an unobtrusive camera that i can just throw in my pocket when I don't feel like carrying one of the dslrs, or when i go out at night, etc.

thx for the info.

I have it, love it. It's big, buy a solid, solid camera. It's well worth the size of the camera for the versatility. It is not a pocket camera.

I also have a smaller Lumix that I loved until I broke the screen, a great camera, I will be replacing it with the Mini-lux Lecia this fall.

My cannon doesn't fit in my pocket

I have this camera and love it. I highly recommend it but it is not a pocket camera unless you are wearing cargo shorts/pants, which is unlikely as you are posting on Style Forum.

GQ - glad you brought up this topic. I was just researching some cameras. I want higher quality than my pocket-sized point and shoot, but don't want the investment of a dSLR. Why spend the money if I'm not that serious of a photographer?

Actually for the cost of a G9 you can get some great entry DSLRs, as long as you don't absolutely need the latest models. Take a look at Nikon D40s, Canon XTIs, Sony DSLR A100s and the such. Personally I'd recommend the Olympus E-Volt E410, which produces excellent images in a relatively portable package; I snagged mine off the 'bay for well less than $400 after the live.com cashback thingy.

The G9 is perfect for those that don't want a cumbersome DSLR but high quality pics. I use my for web work and personals shots and the clarity is great.

I've always thought of the "G" series as the ulitimate back-up cam to a DSLR, at their price point, you're basically hovering close to DSLR territory. While the build quality is amazing, If I was looking at a primary camera, I'd likely just go the S5 route.

Regardless....I still think it's the perfect back-up cam for those who don't feel like continously toting around their DSLR and lense.

Ya. It's also the perfect UW camera in many ways. I doubt anyone here really cares, but if you shoot with a dslr underwater, you have to chose macro or wide-angle before your dive. Once you're down there, you're screwed if something really great comes along and you have the wrong lense. A g9 covers the whole spectrum (although it could be a bit wider) in a cheap package. You can also use wet lenses if you want.

Still, now that i know about the firmware hacks I'm gonna have to check-out the ultra-compacts. It would be nice if this were a dual-purpose camera for me, as I already have what will be a backup dslr.

I never really thought about a lense in correlation to UW, but it makes sense.

I tend to be more of a Canon guy, but I never knew there were any Raw hacks.....I would definately take advantage of it, if afforded the opportunity.
