Navy Wool Top Coat with Brown Leather Gloves?

I just purchased a navy wool/cashmere top coat. Can I wear a pair of brown leather dress gloves with navy? Will that match?

absolutely

I would recommend that you wear only dark brown or oxblood colored deerskin or nappa with your overcoat. Save the lighter colored browns for more casual coats and jackets.

Don't see a problem with it; they're only gloves.

Theoretically, they ought to coordinate approximately in tone with your shoes. Dark brown shoes --> dark brown gloves. Black shoes --> black gloves. Black shoes and brown gloves will look odd.

sorry, I would suggest that gloves don't have to match shoes - some people prefer to wear lighter colored gloves, closer to skin tone. I think that this is a matter of personal taste and light brown gloves are perfectly acceptable with a dark top coat.

Officers of HM Royal Marines and the Royal Air Force both wear black shoes and brown gloves with Service Dress/No 1 HD. It does not look odd.

I think brown gloves go with just about anything, except maybe for a black coat. I don't have any problem with brown gloves and black shoes, and I don't think anyone would really notice it to be particularly odd.

This doesnt really answer the question it only raises a new one. Is it acceptable to wear a black wool ovecoat with brown shoes and belt?

I wear a tabocco brown cashmere overcoat with black shoes. I think if looks perfect (although a contributing factor may be me). it is one thing to match shoes and belt. I don't believe that it needs to go on to your overcoat.

IMO, this is just a variant of the navy blazer and the black pants "problem". Meaning, as long as the brown gloves aren't so dark that they're almost black, you can wear brown gloves with black shoes. Glenn O'Brien, on the other hand, writes on these matters for a living and disagrees (see "The Style Guy", p. 117-all accessories must match). They don't call me "StyleStudent for nothin'-I do my homework.
