Taking a sick day for a doctor's appt

When you need to go to the doctor, but are not neccesarily sick, do you take a sick day?
Do you work from home?
Do you go after work?
Before work and come in late?
Wait for the weekend ( in the event that they are open)
What is the appropriate way to do this??

I Might have broken a bone in my foot, and I really need to go to the doctor for this sooner than later..

Now I am not one to go to the doctor often or call out sick for any reasons(even if i am puking, I am most likely working from home, andi havn't been to a doctor in probably 3 years)

Which to do?

honestly, i'd be more worried about the foot instead of worrying about the basis on which i went to the doctor.

Grow a pair and tell your boss you're going to the doctor to get your foot checked out. Worry about the time off issue later.

Umm, I'd rather not use a personal day/vacation day for such a thing....
I do have 7 Paid sick days though

It is specifically written into the corporate HR policy where I work that sick days may be used (in half-day increments) for medical appointments.

Its all a matter of reasonableness to me...its my first yr at my job, been here over 10 months...have taken off two days, one for a legit doc appt. (they heard me coughing and wheezing, I think they were happy I went) and one for my college reunion. Aside from that I have taken no time off. Now others I know are hypochondriacs and will see a specialist for even the slightest thing, which bothers me, but not as much as people who "plan" to be sick. especially during busy times. On days like post-birthdays etc. I think a decent boss would be ok if you showed up a little late but abuse of a policy is typically noted. In your situation I don't think there is any question. Go to the doctor. The fact that you are soliciting for opinions would seem to indicate that you are not one to take advantage of the illness policy without good reason.

Like a lot of companies in the UK (unlike the US it seems), mine doesn't have an arbitrary cap on the amount of time you are allowed to be sick. But anyhow if you have a max 7 paid sick days I wouldn't have thought taking 0.25 of one of them is a big deal. If you are out of the office for a couple of hours to deal with a medical issue your boss shouldn't have an issue with you taking time out for it. If he does, go and get a job where the boss isn't an ass.

I guess you could work from home if your job allows that after or before the docs, if it meant there was less disruption to the work day from the time commuting to the docs.

If your hours are clocked and its the kind of job which has the flexibility to allow working from home etc as long as you put the hours in, why not just start early or finish late one day to get the hours done.

But if I was your boss I would want you to use an hour or two to get checked out so I don't lose a week or two of your time later when it turns out to be a bigger problem because it wasn't looked at sooner.

I say, Boss, I need to go see my doctor on such and such a time on this date. If I leave around x, I'll be back by y-ish. He says, ok. He knows in advance that I have checked my workload and will not be interrupting anything mission-critical, just as he knows that I will make up the time missed on some other evening or morning, commonly in that week.

If you think your foot is broken, then you're sick and have a legit reason to take time off. Waiting could make your condition worse.

Post a picture of your foot and we'll tell you if it's broken or not

I put up a thing like this the other month. At my old job sick days were not something you could pln for (i.e. use for a Dr. appt)....I thought that was bullshit.
