tailors in seoul korea?

I have a shirt maker in gangnam (seocho-dong area) that does higher end shirts. Won a fashion show award for his shirts so they are on the upper marked prices. Got one commissioned to see how it turns out and ill post the pick when I have it

Here are two suits I got from SEGI tailors. Charcoal Suit is for Spring/Fall season, Blue one for summer. (please ignore the big-flower on my button hole. It was for my friend's wedding.) Since I prefer British style, I gave the tailor all the instructions and details when I commissioned them. Though they're good at tailoring Neapolitan-style suits, these suits look okay to me. Took one month or so for each suit with three fittings (two fittings for second ones.) SEGI tailors have recently moved to Cheongdam-dong area, an luxury boutique alley nearby Galleria Store. PS: would greatly appreciate if someone could tell me how to post pics that would look large without clicking them.

How's the pricing for those? They look good.

Given the current currency rates, price starts with around USD 1200-1300 (KRW 1.5 million) and up. If you want to have a suit made of high-quality fabric such as Loro Piana, the price will go up around US 1700-1800 (KRW 2 million) per suit. Quite expensive compared with Itaewon suits, but quality is incomparably better. Far better than some off-the-rack suits for around that price such as BB.

Quite so. I'm looking at getting 2 suits done at Dperi, if any of you ever heard. It's one of the made-to-measure suit places in Korea (not found in Itaewon). They have a deal of 2 suits for 59만원. The thread count is 170-180 and it isn't bad quality. Once I have them made, I'll post them up.

definitely go check out Goshe for dress shirts. i've tried numerous makers and found Goshe to be one of the better places here in Seoul.

Thought I'd drop an update here on a shop I visited for the first time.

In the past I've had all of my shirts made at Yang's Tailor, and while I have always been satisfied with what he has produced, I've effectively been through all of his books, and had to find a new shop to get some new patterns.

I decided to go to the Hamilton Shirts located in Myeong-Dong. I'm not sure I would go back. When I got the shirt the sleeves were much too long, nearly covering the entire palm of my hand, and stopping at my knuckles. However, the length was not the real issue. I've had that happen before at my usual tailor, I pointed it out to him, and he immediately sent it to be adjusted. However, at Hamilton the woman working told me there was no need to worry as they would shrink upon cleaning them. That would require nearly 3 inches of shrinkage to make them the proper length, which is ridiculous. Anyway...after a few more back and forths, she finally agreed to adjust the sleeves. But, throughout....she was insistent that the shirt was made correctly.

Also, I noted the cuffs were too big, and she measured them. I had ordered 3" cuffs, and she measured them incorrectly to make them appear 3". After I adjusted the measuring tape they were actually 3.5". I then had to point out that it wasn't just half an inch too big, because the same half an inch existed on the other side...making it 1" too big, and making the cuffs appear much too large for the shirt.

I'm not sure if this is just part of the process of changing tailors, or if there is a larger problem. I've heard many good things about the Hamilton Shirts in Itaewon, but I would recommend staying away from the Myeong-Dong location.

Just found this site and thought I would weigh in since I've purchased suits about 8 years ago and in the process of planning a shopping trip.

I primarily had my suits at New York Tailor in Itaewon. Back in '02 he was one of the better tailors. I would often take high ranking US officials to him (or rather him to them). Personally, my suits have lasted me a better part of 8 years with only a few showing wear - those I wear most often and under hard conditions (ie travel, sales calls, walking through city etc).

Does anyone know the current price point and if NY Tailor is still in business? If not I will certainly consider some of the other tailors mentioned here.

The name New York Tailor sounds really familiar to me, but I can't place exactly where it is. Do you remember the general location? Was it on the base-side of the station or the Hannam-side of the station? Next time I'm in the area I'll keep my eyes open and report back.

I've made quite a number of shirts from Hamilton shirts in Itaewon. All I can say is that you really get what you pay for. The workmanship is pretty crappy and yeah somehow they always do something wrong (either the shirt's too long/the sleeves are too long/wrong cuffs are made...etc). They're cheap and they look decent but don't expect too much.

I balance these shirts out with better made ones from Goshe and/or Savile Row. They're more pricey (almost double) but they always get the fit right.

It was near the entrance to Itaewon by the Arch. I found an old business card with the address of #56-13, Itaewon-Dong... tel- 02-749-8222 I dealt with Mr. Park, Wan Yong the owner.

Got it. I'm fairly certain that it's still there, and the next time I am there I will drop in and ask a few questions. When are you planning on coming to Seoul?

Not sure yet, I may try to sometime after New Year, it will all depend on work.
