i keep reading that this piece is iconic or classic but due to my lack of knowledge on the subject i've in fact never seen it before! any tips/books i may read to help me get more acquainted with interior design.

Phaidon Design Classics is a good series of books that cover pretty much everything: http://www.phaidon.com/designclassics/ I'm sure there are different schools of thought about what makes a design classic, but it usually it's something that exhibits innovation as well as simplicity and can be improved very little (if at all) over time.

Once you browse through enough modern furniture stores, whether online or in person, it becomes pretty obvious. You'll see the same decades-old pieces over and over again--and then you'll notice how many contemporary designs reference them.

Or, you could just browse through DWR.
