Kitchen knife storage - Page 2

Incorporate magnets into the design of the slotted section, along the top edge, so the blades are suspended by the magnet and the edges don't touch the bottom. Or, design it so the knives sit in it blade edge up. If it has a lid, you could make a hinged apparatus that would lift all the handles as you lift the lid. Shouldn't be too hard to design actually. And congratulations.

Magnets! Hmmm...I have a few rare earth magnets, and a few more ideas... I'll need to test how well they hold the knives, and see what shakes out from there. I see something taking shape here. Design is kind of fun.

15 bucks at BB&B

I was just going to recommend this. I use a knife bar (unlocked, though), and they're great. Installing one inside a cabined door and putting a lock on it should be easy enough, given sufficient clearance from the shelves.

I use cheap plastic edge guards and have all my knives in one drawer. no block.

So I have a box in the clamps as we speak. Just need to affix a couple of hinges, the rest of the top, install the lock, do up an edge treatment so opening the box isn't a hassle, and maybe apply a coat of oil, and I have a rough draft of a locking knife box. It's not pretty, but given that I have a Sunday deadline and other child-proofing tasks still outstanding/in-progress, it will do. If you'd heard all the cuss-words that spewed forth last night, well...we'll leave it at that.

So about those larger knives... I ended up using angled blocks - with embedded magnets - glued to the underside of the fixed portion of the top. The magnets are powerful enough to let my largest chef's knife hang freely with the box standing upright, and when flat only the heel touches the bottom. For the smaller knives, they have their own slots.

I have pics so far, but am waiting to try and wrap it up tonight or tomorrow morning.

And again, thanks for your well-wishes. The second home-study is Sunday, and then who knows what hoops lie ahead after that.

So I have this box. I used magnets incorporated into angled blocks set along the top (left-hand side).

They're strong. In the pic, this box is upright.

So, here's the finished product - two angled knives to the left (only the heel touches the base), the rest in vertical slots.

Thank you all for your ideas and inspiration.

there was one hiccup, though. ...oh, damn it all. A bit of work with router and chisels and we were happy again. ...and when it's all said and done...
