Someone is selling the address seller.appleiphone2 at gmail.com on eBay and the bid is currently at $455!!!!!! with 16 hours left.

Wish I'd thought of the idea but it never even crossed my mind to do something like this. However, it's crazy that people are bidding on this.

No way they are bidding that much for the email address. Those idiots that bid are probably not reading the description carefully. The seller has 4 such auctions up, all for email addresses with a starting bid of $199.99. It's an interesting plan: build up 100% feedback on ebay slowly over 3 years, make a quick $1,000 in 24 hours, and then disappear forever.

When gmail was new a few years ago and was all the craze, I paid $5 for a gmail account.

Why would you pay?!?
I know it was an invite thing earlier, but after I got mine, I invited whoever wanted it.
I know people asked for invites on forums like this. Of course it was never a problem cos you could just invite yourself again to get a new account with 60 new invites...

Perhaps when it was in its infancy.

The address doesn't seem all that special.

Umm...this happens every time a new gadget comes out. The page was made to look like he was actually selling an iPhone, but with a disclaimer stating "this is for an email address only, not a phone". Just like those people who sell empty XBox boxes, etc.

I've seen those before but this auction had the fact that it was only for the e-mail address in giant red letters. Those others usually have it hidden somewhere in the auction buried among other test in tiny little letters.

Anyone who didn't know they were bidding on the e-mail address deserved to be scammed.

Originally, Gmail had very few invites per person. My memory tells me 5 for some reason.

Hell, I'd pay $5 for Gmail if it were required.
