I had some Moet & Chandon Nectar Imperial this weekend. Very nice.

Nicolas Feuillatte blue label. Much better than VC for the same price (if not even cheaper). By better, I mean less yeasty btw.

For under $20, my fav is Scharffenberger, though technically a sparkling wine. Yes the guy who makes chocolates also makes wines but he sold his stake years ago.

I believe smaller champagne producers offer a more interesting flavor profile in their Non-Vintage blends. Some of the producers I like: Jacquesson, Pierre Peters, Gaston Chiquet, Larmandier, Egly-Ouriet and Billecart-Salmon. Not to say the big negociants of Veuve Cliquot, Moet e Chandon, Louis Roderer, etc.. don't produce any interesting champagne - they do but not until you get into the vintage and prestige cuvees. IMHO, of course. Frixenet is not technically champagne and should be compared to other sparkling wines outside of the Champagne designation.

I don't know how available this is out of the southwest, but Gruet is an amazing bargain. Look for the Brut or blanc de blanc. The best <$20 bottle you will find, and no headaches.

I got the chance to try some Jacquesson the other day when a friend added a half-case to his cellar and insisted we christen the new additions by opening a bottle. It's pretty damn good - more austere than I generally like in champagne but full of character. If you like the style, the price is good too.

An obvious choice and I know others have mentioned it, but Veuve Cliquot is where I set the par. I don't tend to dip much below that. Although, I don't really drink a lot of champagne either.

Here's a third rec for Pol Roger. Lovely champagne.

Moet, of course. The Imperial Nectar is gorgeous, too, and widely available.

Not a fan of Veuve.

Freixenet all the way if you want cheap. Technically it is Spanish Cava but who cares. Speaking of... I should go get some right now.
