Learning to salsa dance

Thread Starter
I'm interested in learning to salsa dance but don't really know if it something I can really get into.
The music itself isn't probably something I would listen to in my car but watching other people that can really dance salsa well motivates me enough to consider taking salsa lessons on a regular basis. I think it's a dance I really can get into if I knew what the heck I was doing.

I took a few salsa classes at salsa night at local clubs and felt really awkward. Anyone take lessons or studied at home? I rented a few salsa DVDs but I get lost at some of the footwork lessons.

There's already a thread on this. Get private lessons, it's totally worth it. A good dance instructor will make you have fun and you'll forget about the intial feelings of awkwardness.

I wouldn't listen to salsa music at home or in my car but it's great at a nice latin bar or club. Salsa dancing doesn't require lessons or a DVD, go to a latin spot with some music and a good group of people dancing. Take your girl by her hands and swing your hips and move with the music. Just have fun, don't over think it and you will be salsa dancing.

That's not really gonna work for someone that already feels awkward dancing.

Start with salsa classes, you need them to pick up the basics. Also a nice way to meet new people. Oh, and make sure you know what salsa style you like most. My fav. is cuban, took me a year of following classes before I dared to enter the dancefloor at the salsa/latin bar.
