MAN! Am I out of shape!! - Page 2

I would strongly advise the cross trainer. You can go faster than walking without putting strain on your knees. Try doing short, fairly slow jogs twice a week, and every other day hit the cross trainer. As you lighten up and your legs get stronger then start running for longer.

I have always done a lot of walking. it just felt easier on my knees than running. I would do distance walks at top speed and just go forever...

I'm an extremely fast walker, with no problems, so I thought I was okay. This was excercise to me.

Well recently, I bought some new shoes, which are technically running shoes (ASICS Nimbus 10)

they feel really good and springy, so today I thought I'd try a little running.

I couldn't even keep a pace up for the length of an entire song!!!!! What is wrong with me?? I was gasping at the end of each "segment", and after 4 segments, I had developed a cramp underneath my right ribs.

This is truly embarrassing. How long does it take to become at least COMPETENT at running where I can run, say a mile without dying!?!?

and if I keep this up, what effects will I see on my "shape"?

Thanks.

mcpaul,
just last october i weighed in a 207 and the winter before that at around your weight at 217 fully clothed.
however, i started off with lots of walking like you, just keep at it, i huffed and puffed and kept at it. later after several months i started running.
now i can run half an hour straight. i am between 173-178 lbs now.

the key is as most mentioned above is diet. get the momentum started that is the hard part, when you get the diet to show some results and you see some of your body melting away, that is motivation to keep up the diet.

make sure you take alot of supplements like multivitamins, omega 3 acids and stuff.

it's just very strange, because I've been "power walking" all my life. That part was not a new thing for me. (because of my vision, I am unable to get a drivers license, so walking has always just been my main means of transportation) I thought the walking would have kept me in somewhat decent shape, but not according to my latest experiment!

went a bit farther today... although the cramp under my last right rib started right from the beginning. the little muscles on the SIDES of my thighs hurt like a bastard today, though! I thought I had somewhat strong legs considering my overall condition, but this hurt!! Do I need to give it an extra day in between running attempts?

Rest is important after any kind of exercising because your muscles grow while they're resting and fixing themselves (rather than when you're actually doing the exercising).

But most exercise plans would start you off on cardio 3 times a week (so only 1 day off between most of the sessions).

I 'learned' to run using the couch to 5k plan that aims to get you to a half hour steady running in 9 weeks.http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml The key to going beyond 5 or 6 minutes was going slower, aiming for time endurance rather than speed. When I got to the end of the program I could run for 30mins but only covered 4-4.5k in that time. But I have since done 10k in an hour for a charity race, and gone longer distances at a slower pace.

I've lost about 60lbs since last summer (now about 185-190). But have changed my eating habits and do a couple of weights sessions a week too.

Running is a great start, but people will tell you a healthy body starts in the kitchen. Also ultimately if you never do any resistance exercises, you will shed muscle weight while you are losing the fat and getting better at running.

when you workout and your body isnt feeling any sorta pain than your not working out any muscle groups. If you want to look buff fit etc. got to www.iwantsixpackabs.com or if you jesu want to maintain wieght go to the website too. Tip instead of walking for hours to burn calories sprint for 1 minutes three times daily increasing your time and sets by your improvement . You will lose more fat faster
hope this helps

The rowing machine and deadlifts. Increase cardio and build muscles. Feel the burn, baby!

I am one of the many that are getting back into the whole exercise thing... But I have only been on hiatus for about 8 months... Well weight lifting... No serious cardio since high school... Which was only 3 years ago. But started back on my bike that has been collecting dust and will begin weight training when school starts. I am right there with you man Gotta lose 20 lbs. so I can fit back into the suits that I wore in high school cause I am a cheap bastard. Yeah I am so cheap I would rather lose 20 lbs than buy a new suit.

Try running at a near sprint for 15-20 seconds, then slow it down to a jog for 15-20 seconds, and go back to the near sprint. Switch off for about 15 minutes. I think doing that for 15 minutes is way better than running X amount of miles

Just keep at it, takes a while to build up cardiovascular endurance.
