MAN! Am I out of shape!!

I have always known that I was fat and getting fatter.

I'm 213, 5'11. 29BMI according to WII Fit, I'm an inch away from being obese. My WII Fit age is 10 years above my real age at 46.

I have always done a lot of walking. it just felt easier on my knees than running. I would do distance walks at top speed and just go forever...

I'm an extremely fast walker, with no problems, so I thought I was okay. This was excercise to me.

Well recently, I bought some new shoes, which are technically running shoes (ASICS Nimbus 10)

they feel really good and springy, so today I thought I'd try a little running.

I couldn't even keep a pace up for the length of an entire song!!!!! What is wrong with me?? I was gasping at the end of each "segment", and after 4 segments, I had developed a cramp underneath my right ribs.

This is truly embarrassing. How long does it take to become at least COMPETENT at running where I can run, say a mile without dying!?!?

and if I keep this up, what effects will I see on my "shape"?

Thanks.

darn, just realized this wasn't the correct forum. Please relocate to body consciousness. Perhaps a subliminal hint I'm thinking too much about food and drink? sorry. I always used to make fun of the runners I would see on a pathway.... while walking, I would go at close to the same speed as the runners would go (okay, well maybe just the slow ones) but then I would pass them a few minutes later as they stopped to gasp and catch their breath. I wont be laughing at any more runners, for sure.

Fix your eating. How long until you see results depends on a lot of things. Impossible question to answer. You should start running and find out for yourself.

Thank you for moving my thread so quickly, although my second post asking for it to be moved is missing. I sure hope it wasn't left behind somewhere on the food and drink forum. Why, thanks for the input. I will keep it up. It did feel good despite how embarrassing it was that I could hardly go anywhere. At one point I passed by this very attractive woman who was apparently doing some landscaping work at her house... I had ran out of breath by that point but had kept pushing on until I was somewhat around the corner and behind a large tree to stop and walk. That made me laugh.

Most of your weightloss will be due to diet, not exercise.

Fix your eating, stick with walking for now until you slim down a bit into more of a runner's body. If you can find an open-air track or somewhere to do sprints, you can get some short-burst cardio workout without your lack of endurance being too noticeable.

Fix my eating. You're right about that. That means no more Coke. and no more snacking. That's a big step. I've recently noticed that although my legs are quite muscular I have a lot of leg fat around the thighs. My eating other than the above, perhaps the only problem is the regularity with which I eat.

haha, the pain under your right ribs is normal...I think it's your spleen releasing more blood? I get it sometimes if I'm running particularly hard. Just build up endurance doing intervals, like 1 minute jogging two minutes walking for example. While there's no such thing as spot reduction of body fat, cardio will burn fat all over your body and slime down your overall profile.

Second that... just run as much as you can.. then walk... then run... repeat. Try over a set "track" around your neighbourhood and see if you can work up to running the entire thing. I'm a shocking runner and this works for me! good luck!

yeah, I used to run around the lake near where I grew up. Barely made five hundred meters the first few times, within a couple of months, I was circling it twice (~8 km). I used to do something pretty similar to m_wave's suggestion to up my distance...pick a landmark [whatever] distance away, and refuse to quit til you get there...then pick another landmark and reward yourself with a walk to there, while walking, pick your next running landmark, and off you go again...repeat. Over a month or so, you will notice you are picking running 'end points' further and further away, and taking shorter and shorter walk breaks. Worked for me anyhow....

Thanks guys, for today I walked (and ran a tiny bit) a total of 6 miles, by my guess. I'll pick a smaller neighborhood "track" of about a mile and work my way up to that. I live in a quieter suburban part of town and don't have much problems with cars, etc. I should be able to find some endpoints, ie. a large tree, the end of each of the playgrounds/school yards I pass, etc. Not looking for spot losses of fat, just an all over. I'd like to fit into some smaller pants, for one. Hopefully running more will fix that. On that note, can anyone recommend some well fitting jeans for someone with a gut and large thighs? I'm going to get a pair, and then get a pair one size down that will be my "goal outfit". Anything to get some motivation...

He's the owner of DenimBar. DenimBar is his username.

He is awesome in many ways and a denim guru. He will help you with anything you could possibly need.

You know, I looked at that Denimbar site the other day, looks good, although they didn't seem to have any "plus sizes" my ever increasing waist has now reached 38. most of those jeans seem to be for skinnyboyz. But thank you, I will see what he has to say. Either way, this should be a big step up from my Costco specials, or even the "expensive" Nauticas... Great recommendations, guys!
