I'm thinking of buying a decanter

I'm thinking of buying this crystal decanter I saw in an antique store yesterday. It had a crystal stopper. Do these things keep alcohol from air exposure for any amount of time? I've seen some newer ones that have rubber on the stopper. Is this more effective/necessary? One old one I saw had cork lining the crystal, but it was a little dingy looking. Any ideas/thoughts?

I'm guessing this would be used for a scotch, not a wine decanter?

Correct. Scotch would be kept in it (albiet consumed within a week or two). I know that, if worse comes to worse, I can only put 300 ML in it at a time and refill it if needed. But it would be nice if I could fill it.

Rummaging through the basement I recently came across an old decanter, the top is all glass, no rubber or cork. I filled it with whisky about three weeks ago and haven't noticed any loss by evaporation.

I have two glass decanters without seals in the tops. I've kept bourbon and brandy in them for months, and experienced no evaporation or oxidation....although I've never tasted oxidation in a strong spirit before, anyways.

You will experience minimal loss or evaporation with the stopper. Bigger issue is that you keep the decanter clean so that it is not tainting the liquor.

That said, I dont know if old crystal will leech anything into the liqour???

Yikes. That article scared me. Now I'm having second thoughts.

Wow, I have just decided never to use lead crystal for any food whatsoever.

Crystal decanters (and glasses) are fine for wine, but use glass for liquors that will sit inside for a long time.

Huh. You learn something everyday!
