I'm in Beijing now, last night had a big bowl of noodles, a couple of lamb kebabs, and a bottle of beer which came out to the equivalent of about US$1.50.

I am fucking broke until payday, I have to get to and from work and eat for the next week on roughly 8.50$.

With my discount I can eat a Maruchan cup of noodles and 2 bananas for 67 cents. It is not very nutritious and only keeps you full for a few hours but if you supplement it with half a hershey bar (54cents) you are able to eat for a little over a dollar and still have the energy to heave 15-60 lb boxes of produce about and help guests (customers) in top-form.

There is part of the problem, I think, in the cost of many peoples' groceries and their nutrition value. Fore thought and planning are required to make the best use of money. For instance, we have a freezer (about $100 bucks at CostCo) so when a good meat sale happens, we can take advantage.

Stocking up on food is the way to do it. My grandfather buys a side of beef at the beginning of the year and eats on it until about October.

Squad-sized MRE (Meals Ready to Eat). Yes, they are military rations so the taste factor is not great, but it's good for your flu panedemic or other disaster preparation stores.

Only $11 (shipped!) gets you a tray of 16-18 servings of a meat entree, which means you paying as little as $0.61 per serving. So for a buck I could get almost two servings -- sure enough to last me a day. Non-meat entrees (e.g. white rice) are even less ... $9 shipped, which brings down the cost per serving to $0.50/serving.

This is shelf-stable food; most of the trays I have ordered and received are 2007 date coded, which means they will store for another 5 years (in ideal conditions).

I've got trays of:

-Pork Ribs
-White Rice
-Turkey Slices in Gravy
-Beef Taco filling
-Corned Beef Hash
-Blueberry dessert

The UPS guy wasn't too happy about lugging twenty four cases of Squad MREs to my door (they're heavy!) but for $11 shipped I couldn't resist.
