Potatoes are quite cheap and inexpensive. A baked potato plain is a wonderful nutritious cheap meal.

Bananas are very good but I think they've risen in price.

I really believe that one could exist quite well, certainly in the short term, solely on potatoes and bananas.

One potato as a meal? My good man, at least two potatoes are required for a fine meal!

In college it was Ramen noodles and potatos for me (usually grated and fried in a bit of oil), with the occassional egg and fruit.

Instant noodle.

Eggs as needed (fried of course) for protein

Spam to satisfy that meat craving.

Instant eats on the cheap!

Plant spinach, kale, red leaf lettuce, peppers, onions, tomatoes, beans, squash. I found seed packets last year for $0.29 each but $1-$2 is more reasonable. Buy 10lb bags of potatoes for $1.80 Dozen eggs for $1.50 Dry milk price has rocketed but still about $2.50/gallon and has other advantages. Ask for dog bones at the meat department (cheap or free). Then make soup. Find a good market. I go to a place that often sells cantelope and honeydew for $1 EACH or even 2/$1. Most places throw out food. Do some dumpster diving. I've seen bakeries put clean loaves of bread, bagels, etc, into big garbage bags and toss em. One score would last weeks for $0. So with certain conditions (land to grow, climate, etc) I could eat like people used to dream about eating.

I would not make it. I probably spend 40 a day on food and that is with cooking at least one meal per day
