surgical masks and disease prevention

So today I was in the street and crossed a bus of Japanese tourists all wearing surgical masks and I thought, thank you for protecting me from you diseases. Do they know those are basically useless at keeping things from coming in and only protect from things coming out of your mouth? If you really want protection, overpressurized P4 suits or cheap russian gas masks are the way to go! Anyone have any thoughts on this?

They won't protect you against the smaller microbes i.e. many viruses, but they will afford some protection against larger bugs. Also microbes often "ride" other larger particles. So they're not 100% useless but you're correct that they don't do a whole hell of a lot except provide a false sense of security. They're kind of like TSA in that regard.

Yes, they do. It's common in Japan for sick people to be rocking the masks. On a small tangent, I recently found out me and some friends were responsible for some sort of flu epidemic in Iwate.

^+1. I saw this a lot in Tokyo around December. Japanese being very considerate of others, they wear the masks you from whatever they might already have.
