He just threw it down.

I was recently in a high-end bistro and ordered a drink and some other food items. The server was rude and flippant. He looked like the was thoroughly unhappy to serve, and yet looked like he was having oodles of fun chatting with the wait-staff, gesticulating everywhere and recounting vapid stories . Mind, this person appeared to have been the main bartender-type of individual. I think he might have been offended by the fact that I was better-dressed--he was wearing a short-sleeve polo shirt and a slightly soiled apron. He also appeared to be a rather surly friend of Dorothy's. When the drink came, he carelessly put it down and then took a large sugar bowl and just threw it down as he walked past--it was not unlike a Chinese government-run canteen. I didn't leave a tip.

Good for you. I detest today's society where the tip is a "given" that's taken for granted. It still has to be earned IMO.

And yes, I know that people often are paid minimum wage and the rest of their salary is made up for by tips but it's still a service industry. Show some minimum effort at least.

I'm surprised you didn't have a chat with his boss. Servants need to learn their manners.

Meaning he was short? Or a tin man?

I had a bad experience at Bemelmen's last week where i didn't leave a tip. Extremely rare. More so because it's my favorite watering hole and usually a bastion of civility.

Perhaps it's just Summer settling in.

When I was at Bememlman's it was ok but wasn't thrilled. ~ Huntsman

It's only on rare occasions that I don't leave a tip, since a waiter, bartender, etc. often gives busboys a percentage and the bartender did provide some service. If service is bad, I'll tip 10%, rather than 15%. Some years ago in Phoenix, though, I was eating with two of my brothers and we had terrible, glacially slow service from a surly waitress and lousy food, so I tipped a nickel (just so she knew I didn't simply forget to tip) and one of my brothers left a "Golf-n-Things" token, good only in Chicago.

Nice Guy Eddie: C'mon, throw in a buck!
Mr. Pink: Uh-uh, I don't tip.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't tip?
Mr. Pink: Nah, I don't believe in it.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't believe in tipping?
Mr. Blue: You know what these chicks make? They make shit.
Mr. Pink: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money that she can quit.
Nice Guy Eddie: I don't even know a fucking Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight: you don't ever tip?
Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.
Mr. Blue: Hey, our girl was nice.
Mr. Pink: She was okay. She wasn't anything special.
Mr. Blue: What's special? Take you in the back and suck your dick?
Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.

I'm always amused by the tip jar by the register - I'm supposed to tip someone out for handing me my purchase? Oh, okay.

^ tip jar by the cashier is more for the coins you'd rather not take with you
