Man, I do love the boozy lunch...

A buddy of mine came over for "lunch" yesterday which consisted of a couple of beers before leaving for the restaurant, a couple of bottles of wine with a 3 course meal, a couple of amarettos after lunch (on the house because we ran up such a big bill at lunch), a few more beers on the terrace out back, a couple more in the pub down the road, then a couple of cognacs as a nightcap.

Anyone else have a midweek indulgence??

What you described was the daily lunch of salesman in the printing industry in the 70's in San Francisco. But, everyone was chain smoking during the entire session, of course.

Did you manage to eat whilst you were drinking your lunch???

Please advise as to which contemporary industries, positions, and cities continue to make this an accessible lifestyle.

About twice a week at one of my old jobs... about 4 or 5 of us that hated our jobs would take 2-3 hour lunches while our experiments were incubating. The lunches would basically constitute of 2 hours of drinking and an hour of sobering up enough before going back into work to finish things up. Now that I've moved on to a new job that I like, I rarely even leave the lab for lunch.

I only get to do this several times a year, when I go to industry conferences

Yeah, it was a bit of a bender, but we did eat a full 3 course meal at lunch so it didnt seem like a standard boozing session. Its not like it happens every week, but circumstances permitted it and when the stars align, who am I to refuse?

I blame the weather. First it was raining, so we had to hide away in the restaurant with a couple of bottles of wine. Then the sun came out, so we had to sit out on the terrace. Then the sun went down, so we had to go to the pub...

Did you find that your experimental error went up significantly when trying to work mildly inebriated? I don't know how many assays I've screwed up coming back from a mid-day bender...

I do believe that the three martini lunch should come back.

I drink a flask of cognac throughout the day.

Depended on the assay. If it was just reading results after the incubation, usually not a problem. If the assay involved me doing dilution or calculations after the lunch, then it definitely went up. Although, I think there was a happy drunken medium where I was actually working better -- just boozed enough to be relaxed.

Fixed.

Pretty similar to my last job. 2 beers during lunch, move over to the bar for whisky or a couple of shots, spend the next hour locked in my office trying to sober up. Of course, I got laid off. All good things must come to an end.

first, when i drink, i don't care to think about moderation. if i know i have to return to work sometime later in the day, there is no point in starting to drink knowing i'll have to sober up later.

second, if i do limit myself to only a couple of drinks, the alcohol makes me tired, and again, this will make me regret having had the drinks once i return to work.

so boozy lunches are great, but only on my days off, when i'm free to continue drinking the rest of the day.
