Double breasted suits first became popular in the 1930's when ties were relatively narrow, say 3.5" wide. However, by the late 1940's when DB's with similar sized lapels were still popular, ties became quite wide, up to 4.5".

The first big revival of DB's was in the 80's when very skinny ties were all the rage, standard widths being 2.75" to 3". At that time the lapels were often somewhat narrower as well.

You might also notice men from England wearing wide lapel DB's with rather narrow regimental ties--this usually looks fine to me. See pictures of Prince Charles--he often wears that style.

I tend to coordinate my tie and lapel width. I have the db jacket in the pic and wear a tie with it that is of similar width to the one shown.

In this article on double breasted jackets, tie width is discussed. However, it makes a good point of how since so little of the tie is shown with the jacket buttoned, a man is served better by ensuring the knot is properly adjusted. http://www.atailoredsuit.com/mens-do...acket-(a).html

Personally, I would say anything around 4 inches is perfectly fine.

Over the age of 15 this is a No No in my book. Not really a good look at any age to be honest.
