Hypnotism

Its fake, right? I have a friend who's afraid of getting hypnotized cause he doesn't want to get messed up afterwards. I think he's secretly afraid that the hypnotist can make him give him all his money afterwards or something like that.

AFAIK: No, it is not fake, but it cannot make you do anything you don't want to do, either. Was your friend considering hypnotherapy or something? BTW, some people (10-20%, IIRC) basically cannot be hypnotised.

As I brought up in another thread with no replies as of yet - See Derren Brown - Mind Control. The things other people can do with your mind is incredible. I would agree with J that hypnotists cannot make you do something you don't want to do, but of course, you have to be honest enough with yourself to know that what you THINK YOU WILL DO, and what you will actually do under abnormal circumstances are completely different things. Most people have a very deluded sense of self, and will actually act the considerable fool, given the opportunity. Personally though, I don't think your friend has much to worry about. If hypnotists could shake people down for money (or sex, or whatever) against his/her will, we'd hear about it.

Or maybe we wouldn't -- perhaps they've hypnotized their victims not to tell.. Bradford

Perhaps, but eventually they'd run into one of the ten percent of the population that can't be hypnotized, and then they'd be in deep poo.

My old man used to do some work for a hypnosis society. Interesting stuff: http://www.asch.net/genpubinfo.htm

Reading that article makes me doubt hyponitism even more when they start claiming it can work for ulcers, ecezma, etc... So, that hypnotist show I saw in high school was real? I assumed everybody was just faking it or had been pre-selected. If it can't make you do something you don't want to do, then why was everybody making a fool out of themselves?

http://hypnosis.com/faq/faq5-1.html Read around on that site, it has a lot of good info. I don't know what can and can't be accomplished by hypnotism, but I don't think someone who is skeptical of it is likely to be the type to be taken advantage of by it.

99% of people are walking around in a constant state of hypnosis. if you've heard people talk about enlightenment or higher consciousness, essentially they are talking about breaking out of this state of hypnosis and living according to their true internal desires rather than reacting to all the external stimuli that hypnotize us everyday. check out fhu.com i don't agree with a lot of what this guy says, but the jist of it is true.
