As the ship nears 50 percent completion, the most unique characteristic of the ships construction process is that the bow stem was formed using steel from the World Trade Center (WTC). In August 2005 NGSS finished construction of the bow stem. Hoisting and welding the 7.5-metric ton bow stem to the ship was completed in August 2006.

"Governor George Pataki, Governor of New York, responded by stating, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t"On September 2001, our nation's enemies brought their fight to New York... The USS New York will now bring the fight to our nation's enemies well into the future." The anger, and the desire for vengeance a lot of americans still feel should not be discounted. While some of this anger has been (mis)used by the current administration for the Iraqi adventure, I still don't believe you going to find a lot of support for "turning the other cheek" amongst the general public.

It's not about turning the other cheek. You misunderstand, as always.

Frankly, this is better IMHO than keychains or something, although it would have been nice to see a bit of the steel used in a memorial or in the foundations of the Freedom Tower. Maybe it has been.

Bring it on, terrorists.

Amen!

too many pansy-assed sissies asking for memorials.

Are you going to deter the bastards with a beautiful memorial? I don't think so.

Don't get catty with me. I was just continuing with the biblical quotation nature of this thread. If you think I misuderstood, feel free to enlighten me, provided you feline anatomy allows you to squat down to my level. And no, it will not sink. It has been quite a while since someone managed to sink one of the US Navy ships. Here is an article I found that mentions what happened to some of the other WTC steel. I am sure it will make all the appeasers and US armed forces haters feel better: "New York -- Approximately 60,000 tons of steel from the World Trade Center (WTC) have been shipped to recyclers around the world, mostly to South Korea and certain U.S. cities. The steel is being used to make soup cans, appliances, car engines, buildings and most recently, medallions. Metal Management Northeast, Newark, N.J., sold about 500 tons of steel from the twin towers to International Agile Manufacturing, Statesboro, Ga., to make commemorative medallions honoring those lost in the terrorist attacks. But the idea is not sitting well with victims' families, who contend that the steel still must be investigated to determine how the towers collapsed. Many families also have seen this as a way for the company to make a profit off of their loss. International Agile insists that it means no offense and has pledged to donate 10 percent of its profits to the Fund for the City of New York, although the fund denies approval of the donation. The medallions are made from an alloy that is 25 percent recycled WTC steel. The company said it would have made them from 100 percent WTC steel, but it would have cost significantly more. International Agile says that it has enough steel to forge 6 million medallions. To date, approximately 10,000 have been sold. "

I just wish the government could have produced something to sell at a profit. That way they could start paying for all of the money they have borrowed.

You mean like a "Going Out of Business" sale?

Tiny amount of WTC steel used for the bow stern of a ship.. *yawn I don't care about the end use. Make whatever, steel has no memory. I probably touched some steel from the WTC when I did laundry today in my South Korean built LG washing machine. There might be traces of Nazi tank steel mixed in there along with a carbon atom from Jesus. The whole thing is maudlin.

Mawkish, and perhaps hawkish.

Given that terrorists tend to act as small, covert, decentralized cells who attempt to integrate themselves with their target environments for many months (even years) before emerging from the shadows to make a sneak attack, you won't kill very many terrorists with a warship either.

Anyway, didn't the WTC collapse because the steel was critically weakened in the fire? Despite the symbolism, surely fire damaged material is not the best thing to be building armored ships out of?

Yes, it pretty much melted during the fire.
