I'm ambivalent about this. I can see the message of strength it sends but, somehow, using the steel to make a war vessel as opposed to something that symbolize unity or rebuilding, doesn't strike me as a great message. Maybe selling the steel to provide more funds to the widows and orphans of 9/11, scholarships ? I don't know...

I don't have a problem with National Defense. I have a problem with preemptive war as in the case of GWB.

Speaking as someone who lost a family member in WTC2 I'd rather see the metal used to create some sort of memorial.

It just doesn't seem right that metal that should be used for unity or rebuilding should go toward building a warship. Typical DOD thinking as far as I'm concerned.

Remember those pop-up coins made from gold stored in the WTC? (Yes, pop-up coins). I think people will look back at some of the tackiness and over-sentimentality in embarrassment. I guess I'm of the belief that you should leave people to grieve quietly. All for a place for them to grieve (a memorial), but stuff like a warship is crass and uses the people who died for patriotic purposes. Even worse, most if not all of those coins which were minted would not have been bought by people who had loved and lost, but by grief tourists. I felt the same when Princess Diana died too.

I'm glad they're reusing the steel for something, but I agree with you. Using it in a weapon of war seems like a poor choice to me. I agree with JB vvvv that I'd have rather seen a memorial or something.

I was expecting some product was created and had nothing to do with charity or goodwill. And my expectations were correct, just not in the form I envisioned.

ya I am with gdl on that one...getting prominent sculptors to melt it down and making an art auction of the sculpted steel with proceeds to widows/fire dept/orphans and so on sends a much nicer message than sending a ship into battle.

Anyone find how much they used? I'm guessing somewhere around a single 5 foot beam or so, possibly even a handful of bolts. The whole thing seems way too "America fuck yea!" for me.
