Maybe a few weeks ago, there was a small debate on the WAYWT thread about whether the deep v more properly belonged to beefy muscular men or to barely-there emaciated types. I know a few of the latter, and they're hardly douchebags-- it's more the guys who sport the v to show off the man cleavage.

Of course, it's debatable whether the shirts actually look good. I have yet to see a pic that really makes me say "wow, the use of the deep v was a great choice!"

I'm not referencing "douchebag" as a description of the wearer's character and personality, just a general term referring to how bad that garment looks on anyone, from emaciated to beefcake

In the late 90s, pretty sure the ribbed vneck was a dbaggy item in the more traditional "kind of greasy guy who flexes in the mirror a lot" way. Coordinated well with a gold chain.

I think the white vneck can still look good when it's worn in a mick jones or pete doherty kinda way, but graphic vnecks and others are pretty terrible.

FWIW, I own zero vnecks other than undershirts. I tend to have more of a "Karl from ATHF" look in them.

This is kind of an "annoying mcsweeney's type" post. Sorry.

I am. And I will say that the deep v is a pretty good sign of douchbaggery of character. Not to say that there are not guys who wear deep v-necks are all douchebags, just like not all dudes who wear fitteds, or Ed Hardy, are douchebags. However, apart from typically looking douchey in a hipster way, ime, at least, wearers of the deep v-neck can often be found indulging in the hipster version of douchebag behavior. The difference is that instead of manifesting in the form of high-fiving, ****-erotic behavior in the gym ("Push it. Harder. All the way!"), and loud talk about "tapping bitches", it typically manifests in smirking at and making snide remarks about people who are just so five minutes ago, talking like they never came from Akron, Ohio, which, of course, sucks, because no one there was their peer, and making references to obscure pop culture minutae that they read about on the internet a couple of minutes ago.

They make a great runway look on skinny people, but personally, I feel they're a bit costumey when worn in a regular outfit. First word that pops into mind when I see a big dude wearing one is douchebag though.

I like the shallow V-Neck of Uniqlo T's.

I am afraid I have to concur with the so-far-majority opinion. Deep v's reek of douchebagginess. On the other hand, they are great as sweat-catcher undershirts when you don't want your t-shirt showing under your button-front.

There's the pop culture references flying. Congrats, shoreman, you are 1/3 of the way there. Wear a tight, ribbed, deep v-undershirt, and you could go for hipster-whitetrash douchebag!

It was very popular on the runways starting about 5 years ago. Maybe the trend is just starting to go mainstream and in another 5 years it won`t be so douchey anymore.

Deep V-neck + hairy chest = Eurodouchbag

I love how they included a "Monarchy/Diesel" style graphic on the douchebag deep-V while the others are solid black

The funny thing is I imagine that Radar is one of those magazines that was pushing this trend at the start.
