Okay this is about half true. Knits tend to pill if the fibre has a shorter staple length, and that depends on the breed it comes from. There are nice fabrics (merino wool) that have relatively short staples.

I never wash knits, I just spot clean and hang them outside for a day.
Wool sort of cleans itself if you let it breath in between wear. Just be sure to not wear the same knit everyday for a long time.

I use a Verilux light wand because it's fast, cheap, easy, and scientifically fucking proven to brutalize germs and tear bacteria limb from limb.
