How many miles did you run today? - Page 631

No doubt. Glad you're okay!

I did a fairly casual 10km run today along the Bay Trail in San Mateo and Foster City. Would have been nicer with better air quality, but I felt great. Less than a week now until the biggest race of my life!

Soon enough Fueco!  I got in 6 miles yesterday.  Dressed wrong for the weather so I was too hot and was also feeling the after affects of a longer gym workout and packing.  Debating on trails today because they were a mud pit last week.

21 miles on trails yesterday.

6. I think it was MP who recommended sitting in the tub while filling up to ease the ice bath trauma, and that worked well. Thanks!

Here's the current forecast for race weekend. I still hope the rain holds off!

I did the half-marathon yesterday. It went great. My knee felt fine, I took it easy on the pace. Slightly sore today (neck and shoulders, maybe I'm doing something wrong with my posture?).

Some people run really stiff looking like they are tensing their back and arms while they run.  I used to do this a little which made my neck cramp to the point where I would have to stop running and do some neck rolls.

There is one kid that runs who I see on my way to work who runs with his arms at his sides.  Seems inefficient to me.

4 miles yesterday along the bay in downtown Miami. A few weeks ago someone recommended running with no phone, watch, GPS, music, or anything like that. I did that Sunday morning and it was great, I just enjoyed the sun and scenery. I'm not sure if I ran exactly 4 miles because I wasn't running with a GPS, but I think that's a good estimate.

Was this your first HM?

The first couple half and full marathons I ran in, my neck, shoulders, and upper body in general were killing me afterwards. More so than any other part of my body. I think I underestimated how much constant swinging of my arms I would be doing over the course of a few hours.

Over the years, with more and more training and running, that has ceased to be an issue for me. I imagine that upper body pain isn't too out of the ordinary for folks new to distances above 10 miles.

It doesn't happen every time, but I sometimes get really tense in my neck and shoulders at the beginning of a run, especially in cooler temps. It gets better as I get warmed up, but doing windmills with my arms seems to help as well.

Ahh, I love taper weeks... I'm running all of three miles today. I just finished portioning out my 'UltraGoop' (my name for this homemade concoction) -just add water and canola oil. With some luck, I can stick to it for however long the race takes to finish. The picture below represents 14,000 calories (I'm planning 500 calories per hour, which I've been able to do for training runs up to 7 hours...

14,000 calories?!?  That is a ton.  I always judge around 100 calories a mile personally but that was on flat land.  I'd assume trails are more.  How does the stuff work?  Like a gel?  Seems rough to carry but you do have aid bags.  While you are running Saturday I will be getting married.  The Civil US ceremony is this weekend followed by a church version in April in Germany.

Congratulations in advance, jb!

7.3 miles tonite. Cold weather gear worked well. 10 degrees w/ wind chill at negative temps. T-shirt and Sugoi 220 jacket w/ Sugoi 180 firewall pants and winter boxers.

Good luck w/ rain holding off Fueco. Temps look warm enough if it rains you'll be ok. However, some things you may have to plan for would be wet feet. Also, 50's w/ rain at night toward the middle to far end of the ultra may affect core temp.

I'm about 250 - 300 calories per hour on my ultras and trail runs. Everyone's different. Personal preference and whatever keeps you moving w/o gastric distress to end is best.
Relax and enjoy the taper Fueco.
Congrats JB!
