BTW, running against a strong headwind can be compared to running up a hill, so you got more than the miles in that run.

Damn trail running....its made road running hard.
So, I did a 12 miler in MN on Sat. My lower legs still hurt from it.
Im hitting a dreadmill tempo run today.
I have a surgical consult this afternoon to see if we can do some interim surgeries to allow my running gait to improve. Need to remove these bone beaks and the nickel sized chunk o bone in my joint that keeps hurting.
Then, we go back to ask for the bone transplant.
Anyhow. Ill likely do a 7:15 MM pace for 45 minutes then call it a work out.

First long run of the year today, 13.25. 45 minutes on the first half, nice pace, second half was considerably slower...very sore by the end. It was one of these at the half way point that got me through it:

And some views from the halfway point:

And who is better than me? At the end of my run my wife was waiting with a fresh Peanut Butter/Banana Protein Shake...mmmm, and now she's making me a rib eye over some salad!

^ looks great out there . . . and the 45 minute half half marathon is rock solid!
Would you recommend the sport beans to someone who is not fond of regular Jelly Beans? I like that there are a lot of them to snack on instead of the single shot of Gu, but I do not like classic jelly beans at all. . . .
6 AM
In 3 hours track workout . . . I am interested to see what type of workout the coach has us do today.

I hate goo, and don't like jelly beans. These aren't as sweet, which is what I like about them, though the caffeinated ones are a little bitter. It was so beautiful today.

The Jelly Belly outlet is 15 miles from my house, I get the sport beans for $.50 a pack. Seeing that I am no carb, I have a ton left if any one wants them!

So, I am having surgery on May 6th!
They are cutting 5 cm of bone off the Fibula head, 3 cm off my talus (these are some bone malformations that hit when I run and really hurt alot), removing the extra bone I have (OsTrigonum) and removing the nickel size chunk that is free in the joint., plus cleaning it up and taking pictures of the sink hole in the dome of the talus. This is an interim to the transplant, but will make running much more comfortable....
FOK.

I need some advice from you runners. I think I have IT Band issues. After my first half marathon, I tried to jog 3 days later. The outside of my knee hurt badly. It hurt especially bad going down stairs. The pain went away after a couple of hours. I waited 3 more days and tried to jog again. After a half mile, I had the same problem. I rested another week, then tried the foam roller on the outside thigh area. It hurt pretty bad. But foam rolling also hurt bad (albiet less so) on my 'good' leg. I tried my best to stretch the IT band using stretches found online. The next morning (this morning), I woke up with bad IT band pain. This is unprecedented, in that I have never just woken up in the morning with the pain - it usually only occurs after running. It eventually wore off after about a half hour, but the outside of my knee still hurts a little. Going down stairs doesnt hurt.

My question: What should I do to recover? Is there anything I can do or should avoid in order to heal quicker?

Lots of stretching.
Try putting the affected leg over the non effected leg and reach for your toes. Lean to the side that is bothering you, and you will feel a full stretch in the IT band from your ass to your knee. Do this 3 times a day for 30+ seconds along with other IT band stretches (google those), and it will clear up fast.
For the knee, it might be a patellar tendon issue, which can be connected to the IT band issue, its usually caused from in sufficient strength in the quads which causes your patella to track off on the knee causing pain.
There are little bands you can buy that sit right below the knee cap that compress the pateller tendon and instantly take that pain away.
Those are my 2 cents.

2012 is the last year of the 59 second grace period - and for 2012 they are allowing for "pre-entry" so a 3:10:59 may not even be enough. Plus, based on last year by the time you run NYC it will already be full.

I'm running a marathon this summer that I hope gets me to the 3:05 range. We'll see.

Was down in FL for a long weekend - got some good pancake runs in (accoring t oGarmin), and a nice 5 mile run on the beach barefoot - which gave me 4 rather healthy sized blisters, not a good time.

I got in 8.5 miles this morning. It was about 63º at 5:15 a.m. - perfect running weather at my favorite time of day. I made it home and to my front porch just in time for the skies to open up behind me.

- 2013 boston also takes a 3:05 or faster for the 34 and under crowd. To get the priority registration one will have to dip 10 minutes below that . . . aye yae yae
mylesmyles - with that 1:21 half I would thing your fitness would put you through sub 3:05 handily.
Ran a broken 5k last night (10 x 500 meters)
I ran in my new workout shoes - Nike Streak XC 2's. I love them but they are no good for much beyond 5k.
Will run 10 today on the dirt before, on a separate note, my bowling league tonight. . .
Bowled a practice game of 243 last night, an all time best. Not running, but still a PR!

^I've only run 3 marathons to date (and I'll be running my 3rd ultra next weekend) but I am confident that if i'm healthy I can run a good time (sub 3:05). I find the distance oddly challenging in that I get impatient and tend to run too hard, as opposed to ultra's where I'm so concerned about not hitting the wall I force myself to run conservatively.
