Also, I forgot to mention that I came across a woman running in the hijab. Didn't seem to be slowing her down...

6.8 miles tonite. Chilly and windy. I hate running in the dark. Knuckle lights are fine, but still prefer daylight.

3 and a quarter today.  I've never been much of a runner but need to get in better shape so I signed up for a half marathon in April.  I've been running 2-4 miles, 4/5 days a week the past three weeks to get ready for my 16 week training that starts next week.  I wanted to be able to do 4 miles non stop at a 10 min mile before training started to hopefully ensure that i'm able to do everything by the time the longer runs start.  Just wondering if anyone had any advice for a beginner?  Also, is there a GPS and heart rate monitor watch that you guys suggest?  I have been running on the treadmill but would like to get outdoors and maybe hit some trails.  Thanks

I use a Garmin 305 and got it from Amazon for like $120 but now the prices seemed to have jumped since it is an old unit.  I have had good luck with Garmin so I stick with them.  You will enjoy running outside more as everyone does and it may feel tougher at first but it is worth it.  Other advice I would give a beginner is to not outrun your training base.  It looks like you can handle 8-20 miles per week.  I wouldn't go run a 15mile long run with that but would work up to it.  I know people whom go out with no training and run 4-5miles then hate running because it makes their body hurt.  I am in good shape but if I went out and outran my training base I'd be in pain to.  Just be smart and listen to yourself.

5.75 today, recovering from another minor chest cold.

As far as the hijabs, I live in a predominantly Muslim neighborhood and see it all the time...I love it!

Congrats on signing up for the half and getting into running. Great choice and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. There are quite a few very good runners on here that can offer you advice. I'm not one of them, but as far as early advice I'd suggest reading as much as you can about taking care of yourself and the equipment to help you do that. Can't run far if you are injured. Good shoes, running socks, wicking shirts, etc. and following your plan so that you don't ramp up too quickly or over train.
GPS and HRM are up to you. Plenty of reviews online with a wide variety of prices. I have a Garmin 610 and am very happy with it but there are quite a few others out there. Some cheaper, some more expensive. Depends on what you use it for, how often, and what your looking for.
Good luck.

Nice run at 5:30 a.m. About 4.5 miles. Temperature read 30 degrees, but with no wind, it was not a problem. I am dealing with "conductor's shoulder" issues--probably shoulder tendinitis. Running really helps loosen up and take away the pain.

If these people don't stop scheduling meetings during my running time, things are going to get serious very quickly.

I did a leisurely 6 miles this morning and then around 2:00 it was so nice outside that I did another 9 miles. I am running in a 10k jingle bell run tomorrow that runs right past my house.

When I was out this afternoon I came around a corner and saw two firemen out clearing out a hydrant and thought of this:
