16 miles yesterday
Amazing weather, I wish it would stay that way.

This time I brought hydration and gel, made all the difference.

Last week was my first week over 50 miles.

I had a similar week - 16.25 miles yesterday (48 total for the week). This makes it 4 weeks in a row with over 45 miles/week.

My body is now telling me to scale back with little aches and pains. Hope to put in a recovery week of 25 to 30 miles before I crank it back up for my marathon in June.

I did my first half marathon on Saturday. I had anticipated a finish time in the 2:05 neighborhood as I've been running most of my long training runs around 9:30. Around mile 10 I realized I had a chance to break two hours. I came in at 1:59:33. Not fast like some of you speedsters, but I was thrilled with the result.

And then the knee pain.
I felt great the whole way, crossed the finish line, then went back and stood for 8-10 minutes to wait for my wife and neighbor to come in. When I started walking again my right knee hurt like HELL. This is only the second time this has happened - last time was on my last long training run. It's on the outside edge of my lower right knee - kind of 8:00 / 9:00 position if you were looking at my right knee as an observer. The rest of Saturday and Sunday was me swinging my leg from the hip because bringing it forward swinging at the knee is BRUTAL.

Anyone else ever experience this? Is that IT Band? I think it might be b/c I can press on the outside portion of my lower thigh and it's much more sore than the left thigh - which I'd assume to be the band going from my hip to my knee.

Congrats on an awesome race!!

Sounds like IT band to me - try one of those foam rollers. Check out this forum http://www.runnersworld.com/communit...ntion/injuries for more info.
Good luck!

Conditions: 43F, light drizzle 4.5 miles in 37:43. Probably lost about 2 min for traffic lights, etc. So, bottom line is a shade under 8 min/mile. Need some speed...

Hmmm. When I had IT band issues, the onset was a good deal slower than just *bang* at the end of the race - it was more of a gradual escalation in mid-run. And the onset for me tended to be around 3 miles, like clockwork, until I finally stretched the heck out of it for a week - after that the issues never came back. I think that was in 2002.

Congratulations on the race, though!!!

THere is a few very good stretches for this:

Cross your good leg over your bad one, and touch your toes, you will feel your IT band at your hip, rotate away (to your left) and you will stretch the IT band lower towards the knee. There are other more complex ones that are like Yoga moves, I wont describe these!

The one that worked for me involved standing in a doorway. Pretty simple, actually.

Let's say your right knee is afflicted.
Stand in the doorway with your right foot at the left corner of the doorway. Lean to the right and jut your hip towards the right side of the doorway as you use your right arm to push your upper body back to the left.

In essence, you ought to resemble a boomerang, and you should notice your hip releasing. After a week, I could touch my hip to the other side of the doorway and keep my right arm fully extended, and by then I had no more troubles.

Pushed back out to 3.2 miles today, aiming for a 5k on May 1 (first since the fall). My speed is atrocious, but I'm going to try some speed work. Part of my slowness is the extra weight I'm packing around right now.

4.5miles

November 2008 I started to run. I weighed almost 230lbs... Now I'm at 175lbs... I'm not quite at my old college weight (150's) but I'm getting there slowly and surely.
