Ipod + watch is about all the technology I can stand; sometimes I run to get away from technology.

Usually I wouldn't even bother with gadgets either, but I'm really interested in training smarter. One of my new life goals is to qualify and run the Boston Marathon, hopefully within the next 3 years. I have a long way to go..........

nice to hear others running through the winter. sounds like you are braving the elements more than i am.
I enjoy running in the cold, but I imagine michigan winters would be pretty tough for serious winter training.

get a garmin. Ive had the 205 for a couple years now and I recommend them to every runner i know who doesnt have one. I'm pretty minimalist when i run, so i was hesitant to get one too, but now i couldnt imagine not having one.

5.5 in 20 degrees plus 1-2 inches of snow all over. Took 37 min because of the snow normally would be just over 30 minutes.

i love running in the bitter cold because its such an accomplishment just to get the miles in... plus you're usually alone running out there. but i ******* hate running in the humid summer heat, even more so than any type of cold. last summer was ******* terrible for running for me. my usual running route got taken over by all these film crews from different movies/shows (not even good movies either - stupid kevin smith movie, jennifer anniston vehicle, ******* ugly betty, ect) in addition to the summer heat. its cool that they actually film movies in NYC again but do they really need 15+ huge trucks and containers with everyone taking over the whole sidewalk and street? sorry for the rant but even in the winter now they are going to shoot some of the new Scorsese hbo show soon.

One learns to live with it.

It's not the cold; it's the wind that gets me.

Don't get me started. They're filming in Bay Ridge what seems like every month now. It doesn't effect my running, but parking here is generally a nightmare (though nothing like where I used to live in Park Slope) and they shut down ENTIRE STREETS so the crew can park their trucks. Assholes.

Yea, the wind sometimes just feels like it blows through me. If its below 30 I try and just go to the gym and lift, but I want to start running a bit more as I feel like lately I've lost some stamina, so I'll have to bear it. I usually wear tights under my running shorts, a cold gear turtleneck, a dryfit long sleeve top, and then an outer layer (usually a windbreaker type thing). ANy suggestions for a great outer layer piece that will keep me warm in 20 deg?

Time for new shoes too...been running in my backup pair as my go to-s have started to break down (feeling it a bit in my IT band after runs, so had to switch to my backups)

5 miles (40 minutes) on a somewhat sunny Sunday afternoon with temps in the high 'teens. At least the roads are free of ice.

If its really cold (lower than 10F) I'll wear an thin old merino wool sweater over a long sleeve dri-fit top then a running jacket over it. Even if its totally cold I'll end up wanting to take off the jacket half way into the run. Its great - the wool lets you breath (even when wet) and keeps you warm. I ended up purposely shrinking an old lame jcrew sweater just for the extra cold day runs.

Just a 5k today. REally really slow. Its cold so I just like to see what I can get in in less than 30min. As long as you get something in right? LOL

I wanted to run one more marathon before I turned 40, and what with school and family I decided that I'd train hard to run a couple more halves, and then after 40 I'd take a run at Boston. At 40, qualifying jumps to 3:20 which should not be too arduous if you're turning a 1:35 half without too much stress. .... oh, and this lingering cold/congestion put me at 4 miles for today. Just didn't want to run past that. This week ought to go better, though, I have a 10k in four weeks, and I'd like to go for a PR.
