That's longer than what I was hoping for. :( I guess I've got to be patient and persist with the rolling. Thanks for the info, this is good to know.

I had a similar issue with my IT band in '02 or so, it stopped me dead in the middle of a 10K, couldn't even walk it in. Ended up finding a stretch that worked for me within about 3 weeks. Warm it up in a shower or hot tub, then stretch it at the hip in a door jamb - I ended up where I could put my right foot on the left side of the doorway, touch my right hip to the right doorjamb, while pushing my shoulders back to the left. It has not flared up since. Good luck.

Well I was fully fine to get back to running/crossfit in about 6 weeks, I just had to do extra stretching/rolling

Six. Negative splits thanks to coming up on a guy who inspired me to keep the hammer (such as it is) down.

Well, the marathon exposed the deficiencies in my training plan, and I didn't fare too well. I was strong for 16 miles - going from 8:30 opening mile to 7:30 steady pace - but at 16 my hip started pinging a bit. At 18 I started walking here and there and I found that when I tried to stretch my howling quads, my hamstrings would cramp. LAWL.

Ignoring the hill training cost me dearly, and so did my lack of core training - I did some, but mostly it was an afterthought. For some reason I wore lighter shoes to race in and I didn't think the pounding would be that bad, but it was. Oh, and I got my first blister (big toe) in years. YEARS. Then, we had to be in our corral by 6:40, and for some reason I only wore a throwaway t-shirt over my running shirt, and even tossed that earlier than I should have, so I wasted a ton of energy keeping warm (39 degrees at the start, 60's at the finish). Spent too much time on my feet, too. A lot of blunders, but I know what I did wrong and know better for next time.

The good news is that this morning, my quads are the only really sore spot. splits were 1:45 / 2:02 for a 3:47 marathon. Still a PR, though, and plenty of room for improvement.

Way to go Thomas! Pulling out a PR when not everything went as well as you would have liked is impressive! Enjoy your recovery time.

Whats next up on your racing calendar?

4 easy miles.

A PR is a PR. That sounds like you really hung in their man. That takes balls! I ran a similar positive split in my last marathon as well and it is definitely the hard way!

6 for me tonight at around 6:55 pace.

Thanks guys! I'm already penciling in Houston 2013, and thinking of another Texas marathon in the meantime: Austin or San Antonio, preferably. If nothing else, Angie's Half Marathon in Baytown in March.

3rd run since deciding to get off my butt: 2.5 miles again. So 7 miles in my first week. Will try to get in 7.5 this week and keep increasing piece by piece. Might have to run alone and get the girlfriend to understand. The run on Saturday wasn't good. Kept having to slow down/jog in pace because she couldn't keep up with my stride.

Thomas--Great job with the PR in spite of difficulties. The marathon is a stern teacher, but fortunately one we can learn from.

Six miles in rain and snow, and a strength workout at the Y.

I heard that Austin is pretty slow, or that it used to be but maybe they changed it to make it faster.

For me 8 tonight with 2 miles east and then 4 miles of 16 x 100 with recovery at 7 minute pace. I took it very easy, barely accelerating during the 100's. Spoke with the track club coach who agreed that I had a decent training plan going in to Boston, so that was reassuring!

Another month of base building. Hopefully will get +/- 50 miles this week.
