Ati 4850

Thread Starter
ATI has finally decided to price their cards competitively again. The 4850 debuted for $189 and is basically running within 3-5% of the nvidia 9800GTX! http://firingsquad.com/hardware/amd_...rce_9800_gtx+/ Remarkable. If the 4850 can hold its own against a 9800GTX+, imagine what the 4870 will look like. I'm really looking forward to it.

We are in a downturn right now. Depends on really what you like though.

Theres a lot of online poker...

There inlies the problem - with PC gaming being such a barren wasteland, you're basically spending money on a nice video card to play year-old Xbox 360 games, the occasional strategy game (of which there have been some recent gems), and Valve games still running on the Source engine. Of course there are MMOs to factor as well, but WoW is the only one that retains a good amount of subscribers, and a Radeon 9800 could run that game just fine.

I've given up on PC gaming and got a 360 instead...

I've got a 360 and it mostly collects dust, it gets some use as a media player though. There are a lot of good games out for the PC they are just starting to get repetative. You've got really good stuff out like CoD4; Team Fortress 2; All of the Half Life games; every single strategy game; and the crazy like crack MMO's people play.

I have an 8800 gts and that's basically all it gets used for these days. At least it will be driving dual 24s in the near future though. Or maybe a single 30". Haven't decided yet.

Nobody likes Crysis or the Orange Box?
You don't need the 4850 for Orange Box and it still can't play Crysis (well ).

I bought a 3650 just a few weeks ago to run through my HDTV and it is very surprisingly clear for dvdrips and what not. Very good investment!

Crysis is meh.. I personally didn't enjoy the game very much, despite the gorgeous graphics. I play Source games (i.e. the Orange Box) on my laptop with 2gb ram and GeForce 8600 on full settings at aorund 45fps, so I really doubt an ATI 4850 is going to do a whole lot on that field.

Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 should liven up the landscape.

If you like MMOs, WoW's expansion should be coming out sometime near Xmas (no official release date as of yet), Age of Conan was recently released (fairly high PC reqs, gameplay was fun initially, tapering moreso at the end of leveling), and there is always Warhammer whenever that comes out.

All in all, I'm greatly looking forward to PC gaming again, even considering only Blizzard's upcoming games.

Look at Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 screenshots. The graphics are cartoony and not particularly demanding, which is deliberate; Blizzard wants as large an audience as possible, as was the case with WoW.

I think Warhammer Online is taking the same approach, as well.
