Moleskins-washing query.

Has anyone ever tried washing their moleskins in a washing a machine? I have just bought some and note that the instructions are to dry clean only, which is a bit of a disappointment, as I was planing to wear them frequently, and I don't want to spend a fortune on dry cleaning bills. If anyone can offer any advice, either positive or negative then please do.

I wash moleskin shirts (Jil Sander) in the machine regularly, with no damage. On the other hand, my Costume National jacket will never see the machine, for any reason. It really depends on the fineness of the nap. If the moleskin has a really fine nap, forget it. If it is fairly short and rough, no harm done. Check with a tailor just in case.

As a general rule, moleskins should not be machine washed because they will shrink. I ruined a pair of moleys by trying to machine wash them, and even on the hand-wash setting they shrunk considerably and were unwearable. In this case I would follow the care label.

I have never machine-washed my Filson moleskin pants. Too afraid they'll shrink (and the label says dry clean only).

the other concern is color fade. My British friends swear by their plain front, closely tailored, thick molies in bright FU colors ... purple, fire-engine red, etc. On the other hand I had a pair of standard Polo khakis made from a fairly heavy moleskin fabric and both dry cleaned and machine washed (with drip dry, of course) and they were none the worse for wear in shrinkage or color loss.

Thanks for the replies, Gentlemen. I will follow the instructions after all, I don't want to risk ruining a brand new item.

Is there another kind? Apart from green or buff for country sports, the colour of a gentleman's moleskins should always set him apart from the hoi polloi.
