Thanks guys. Definitely another satisfied customer here.

Broke down last night and ordered the 257 myself after a long comparison against the 240. Seems to be a common dilemma!

Not an expert on duties, so just wanted to know if that $48 they extracted from you was primarily for PST / GST? (ie, was there any exemption given Filson is manufactured in the US?)

2 questions regarding Filson bags: 1) Comparing the 258 & 257. How much bigger is the 258 in terms of storage and is it noticeably larger to carry? I travel weekly so I need a bag that can carry a laptop, papers, ipod touch and accessores. 2) Is the 25% coupon still active? I tried it on the site and received an error message. Thanks!

The 258 is a bit bigger, 16 1/2" W x 14" H x 7 1/2 " D versus 16" W x 12 1/2" H x 6" D for the 257.

What code are you using? SFFilson2 is the one to use.

I've got the 258.
While I like it, I'm not sure the padding is really that useful.
If I had to do it over, I think I'd prefer a 257 and use a lappy sleeve.

You can easily fit a bunch of crap into the 258. Probably a lot more than you'd want to carry.
The empty 258 is actually fairly heavy. What you listed would easily fit in it though.

Thanks zippyh. I actually carry more than I listed -- ext hd, calculator, and a lot of cables & adapters. Does the padding on the 258 give it shape and where is it located? Also, did you physically compare it to the 257? I'm curious how much bigger the 258 is relative to the 257. Thanks!

In early 09 Filson will be offering some of their luggage in dark brown. Saw some pics yesterday and can't wait to seem 'em in person. Hopefully I'll be able to say something about the other little surprise from Filson soon.

Wow (and about time). I can't wait to seem them either.

The padding is on the bottom and sides of the bag.
The padding seems less dense than most laptop sleeves.
The canvas of the bag is very stiff so that tends to give it shape as well although it'll probably
soften with age.
I just got the Filson zippered tote and even when empty, it maintains a boxy shape. (BTW,
it's the ideal size for carrying a human head according to people at work).

I have not compared the 257 and 258 side by side. I've just gone by measurements.

Edited to add the following...
I looked at a 257 tonight at Barneys of all places.
It seems a fair bit smaller (not as deep) as the 258. Height and width are similar though.

Do you know which bags? Most of the popular ones?

I ask because certain design houses are offering dark brown Filsons already, but at more than 2x retail.

Those Filsons are from Jean Shop, which does the dye/antiquing work themselves (kind of a rip off twice the price too, but hey).

thats right, I had forgot where I saw them, they were on bluebee.

although certainly possible, this doesn't look like it could have started in the tan color. looks like brown:

Twice the price and I'll bet no warranty from Filson either. My field bag doesn't look that jacked up after 5 years of constant abuse. Guess mine's worth 3 times the price since the wear is legitimate and not faked. LOL. Anyway I'll post a list in a day or two.

Thanks again zippyh. Looks like I may be headed towards the 258. Sounds like the right size for carrying all my stuff. I wish there were places either in LA or SF where I can actually see a Filson bag... so annoying. Crane -- You shouldn't have mentioned the dark brown Filson! I may have to wait until 2009 before I pick one up...

Do you have pictures of the new brown?
No I don't but the color is the same as the dark brown waxed cotton coats that are available. The pics I saw of the luggage were in the winter/spring ordering guide.
