I wouldn't go so far as to say it's bad. It's very crowded and there's a $10 entry fee. The BBQ being sold is from large vendors, not the competitors, so it's on the level of Rocklands, which is to say decent but not mind-blowing.

Yes, I'd like to check out some of meetup groups. Thanks for the links to some ideas. Maybe I'll check out the bbq with weekend just to enjoy the weather. Anyone been to the DC Caribbean Carnival? It's happening next weekend.

Take a cooking class. You'll likely meet some interesting women and guys to pal around with. Most single women today are lost in the kitchen and a guy who can cook is golden. Cooking is the most fun you can have with your clothes on!!

I took a three-week beginner cooking class about a month ago, and it was a ton of fun, if a bit pricey. The demographic of the class was a bit older than what I expected; maybe it was the luck of the draw. I was very focused on following the instructor, so I didn't do that much socializing. Nevertheless, I would recommend it for getting some important life skills.

reach back, do you have friends of friends in the area? Are you affiliated with any group, and if so do they have a chapter in the area? Join a group that encourages bonding (long hours together, work) such as Habitat for humanity or just volunteer. These present you in a good light, and the people you meet here are usually of good moral character.

just go join an [anything you have always wanted to try but never got around to] club. Moving to a new city is the best time to do it.

If you're into partisan politics, that's a very easy way to meet people.
