I might be the only one, but I also enjoyed Takeshi Kitano's Brother.

Brother is great, I actually like it more than Kitano's Japanese films.

The 1960s "Yakuza Papers" movie series is phenomenal if you havent seen it. You can get it in a metal can boxset that is worth the high $ it sells for. Bunta Sugawara is excellent as a guy that gets involved with a Yakuza crew right after WWII and each movie profiles his rise to power within the family.

By far the BEST yakuza film I've ever seen is "Shussho Iwai" (called The Wolves for US market) from the early 70s by Hideo Gosha and starring Tatsuya Nakadai. It takes place in the 30s and the story is very complex but extremely well written, about 2 best friends in a Yakuka clan and the political backstabbing and manipulations they go thru. Amazing cinematography, acting, sets, and each character is richly developed. It's a healthy 2.5 hours long so it gives every scene the attention is deserves. Really hard to get, almost impossible now, but if you see it buy it/rent it/steal it.

an old ex of mine's dad had both his fingers shopped off. Pretty crazy.

and if you've seen closeups of Tebori (hand tattooing with the sticks), it's fairly rough looking up close and not as refined as work done with a Tattoo MACHINE (not gun). But it's an amazing process that will probably soon be lost to time.

In the mid 90s when I was in Tokyo NO ONE had tattoos except yakuza and I'd def get a lot of looks standing on the subway train...and now tattoo shops are everywhere and all the kids have them. The stigma of tattoos in Japan is def over since the early 2000s

They had an article on Men's Vogue about their suits. It was said they are usually made with hidden pockets for bribe money. I think they called them "payout pockets." Flamboyant pleats were also common. The tailors relied on the yakuza in times of economic recession and were pleased with them as customers since they brought in so much money, though one noted that they have pretty bad tempers.

Yakuza are very prominent in the Japanese Tosa dog fighting scene. The word I have gotten is that the Japanese government would like to ban Japan's legal dog fighting, but the Yakuza have so much dirt on the politicians they won't let them! The long-time doyen of the Tosa fighting scene, Mr. Sudo, always tried to make sure that the Yakuza kept their respective feuds, etc., away from the Tosa tournaments. Since he was universally respected by all parties, he was quite successful. Mr. Sudo personally picked my first Tosa, Inazuma, for me.
