Just what any audiophile needs to go with his styrofoam cups.

Denon is hawking an ethernet cable for an astonishing $500. How can the company possibly justify this quite ludicrous markup on what is essentially a tube for shifting ones and noughts across the network? As you might have guessed, it's because the "ultra premium Denon Link cable was designed for the audio enthusiast".

For me, this casts doubt on the value of their other products.

I really need to start making all my cables like that. Snazzy looking and such.

I could see charging that much if it was more than a copper Ethernet cable. Multi-transmission silver cables, or ones incorporating some variety of fiber optics, to allow to transmission of ridiculous amounts of information faster.

People buy $40-90 HDMI cables all the time. It boggles my mind.

It doesn't work like that.

To add to what Dusty said: the signals won't go any faster or any slower. You're worried about the resistance (how much signal loss) and capacitance and inductance (how much of the signals frequencies are being cut off).

Cables are the biggest bunch of nonsense in audio. Ridiculously priced Monster makes their cables appear bigger by adding a bit of plastic in the middle of the copper.

Expect price of cables to go up in the future. The price of copper, along with other materials, is going up. And don't forget about the standard of living going up in China.

I wonder how this cable compares to a $20 ruggedised exchange-grade cable.

The cables have arrows on them to "indicate correct direction for connecting cable"

Oh dear... Did the Denon people sit around at a meeting and go "fuck it, let's have a contest to see who can come up with the most ridiculous product possible"

Sad.

Ethernet cable, for $500? ETHERNET? Has the world gone mad?

Sorry, can't say anything about that. Too busy drafting my business plan for audiophile-quality USB cables. Do you think $300 is too low?

Sending large tubes quickly through the ethernet demands minimal friction and bilateral directional organization.

Maybe it's time I became an 'audiophile' management consultant.

I have found significant sonic differences in various analog cables but for a digital HDMI cable, this is obscene and really not necessary. I bought a cheapo one for my new BluRay player.

Unlike other high end audio products, the barriers to entry are very low and there are enough suckers born every minute.

Quoted for irony.
