Allergies and over the counter

I was wondering if any of the OTC allergy medications were better than others? I've been having a difficult year so far and i'm not inclined to suffer out the allergies any longer.

I use Nasonex because I don't think that the tablets works. That just my opinion though.

I got a lot of relief from a very simple sinus rinse called NeilMed. It was recommended by my Ear, Nose & Throat specialist and it works well. Just twice a day makes a big difference.

Loratadine = Claratin, right?

Regarding the nasal stuff... do i understand correctly that nasal sprays and such have a high volume of addiction?

Yes to nasal sprays that shrink sinuses. That is temporary and then when it wears off they actually get enlarged. But, NeilMed is simply a saline solution and not a medicine. Saline cleans away pollin and helps your sinuses return to normal. Even if you don't suffer from allergies it will help a great deal when you get your next cold.

I hear Aerius is more effective than Loratadine (Claritan).

Absolutely. I use this three times a day and it has done wonders for my allergies. I made a fairly detailed post about it on SuFu.

Allegra (fexofenatidine) works the best, and if you have nasal or chest congestion then Allegra D (with pseudoephidrine). Loratidine too, being an antihistamine, would work. Most stores, I know CVS does, have a store brand that will save you almost 3-5 $ on their product. Both as essentially the same and you can save money for clothes !

i'm starting with the neti pot (neilmed) and will move on to real drugs when i finish cycling through some antibiotics.

Nevermind, looks like Aerius is only available in Canada OTC (Generic name is Desloratadine). It's also marketed as NeoClarityn, Claramax, Clarinex, don't know if the US has those/

The neti pot and the Sinus Rinse are of a like kind.

I would be careful with the real drugs, though; they will become less effective as your body becomes more and more used to them. I would suggest that you use them only when absolutely necessary and simply stick to rinsing out your sinus two to four times a day, as that is simply a natural solution. (One problem with the sinus rinse is that it's not really preventative, although it does open up your blood vessels.)
