Those Freitag bags are very cool, but unless my currency converter is malfuntioning they are way expensive at $400.

This bag looks to have more than enough room for everything I need, and would probably be my first choice as of right now. If I bought this bag, I would probably just buy a smaller bag for casual use.

I suppose I could always for the Robert Geller Fall '08 Large Calfskin Backpack.

Any opinions on these or suggestions of other bags would be greatly appreciated.

Deal?

That's a good deal on the Filson 257!! +1 for Crane's - that store is awesome.

I have a 257 and like the bag alot. It's a little big for "casual" use (though I use it for that in addition to work and school use), but accordingly has lots of space for a macbook and textbooks. You might want to get a slim sleeve for your macbook though or things could get a big crowded.

It's also nice that the bag has handles, so you can carry by hand instead of over-the-shoulder if it's really heavy/uncomfortable. The quality of the bag is excellent, it really looks like it will last me for life. And, I'm not too concerned about getting it dirty because it just adds character to the canvas. The only negative thing I would say about the bag is it's a bit heavy because the canvas is so thick (22 oz. I believe), so the bag by itself (when empty) weighs about 3 pounds.

This is certainly a bag that will be suitable for professional use down the line as well imo.

And...you can always get a smaller #240 (medium field bag) for casual use too!!

What is the appeal of messenger bags? I understand they look nice. But for school?

Having a laptop, a couple text books and a note book all rested on one shoulder? I was once naive too but now that I've actually tried the messenger... Never using it for school ever again.

Anyone wanna explain? Am I just weak shouldered? haha.

If it gets too heavy, put it across your body and it makes it a lot easier to carry. If you carry it just to the side, it will make your tired a lot quicker.

Moosy, that bag is from Paul Smiths' Japanese online shop.

Yeah, well I do wear it across my body, it's still heavy as hell. I always have to change shoulders every 30 seconds. Anyone else have an explanation?

Find a retail location near you. I paid $250 locally for the 17". It's the shipping that really jacks up the price when ordering online. eBay is also a great place to look. They're usually under $75 on there.

Either you're weak or you're carrying too much shit for a messenger bag. If you're getting tired, get a backpack. This is pretty basic.

Had to bump this post because this bag just got released and I love it. These things are beautiful and the price is fantastic. Placing my order next week.

from the tanner thread, hoping someone can shed some light.

Filson luggage is seriously underrated stuff. I own a few pieces and the things they go through would leave most bags in pieces. I really like fine leather but if you do not care for it you'll destroy it in a few years. Be advised.

On a similar note, do not waste your money on a Krane bag. Though they look extremely nice, the quality is pretty lousy especially for the price. Before I even used the bag, one of the rivets popped out (it was broken) on the strap when I adjusted the length. Now I noticed that the leather connecting the handle to the bag is lousy. On one side, its pretty thick and durable, and on the other side it's just two thin cheap pieces of leather sewn together to make it look like a thicker piece of leather. I haven't sent the strap in for repair yet (bag comes with a two year warranty) but overall I'm disappointed with this brand.

FWIW, I've had just the opposite experience. I've had a Krane Saelen briefcase for a while now and just ordered a messenger bag . . . . I like Krane just as much as Filson, for example, and haven't found there to be a huge quality difference. That said - Krane is more worth it when it's on sale. You can find deals and coupons, etc.

Interesting... I have both the Krane Saelen (black) and the Filson 257 Laptop Briefcase (tan) and I like them both. The Krane is much sleeker and smaller and also looks very professional; the Filson's "vibe" is obviously completely the opposite. In terms of quality, the Filson is clearly much more rugged and durable from a materials perspective, but so far my Krane is no slouch. I'm having the odd difficulty with the Krane zipper, but there are other aspects of the bag that make up for a fussy zipper. (I simply love the look of it.) In the end, I don't think the bags/brands can be compared. Plus, as a side note, when I bought my Krane I got to deal with the designer himself which always makes the experience more rewarding. Since having both for awhile I have ordered another Filson style and I can't help but think I may order a matching Krane down the road as well.
