Tonic Water

Anyone ever made their own tonic water? I just tried making my first batch, and have to say it is much better than Schweppes, etc.
Used:
.5 tablespoon quinine powder
1 teaspoon citric acid
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon lime juice
3 stalks of lemongrass
3 cups water
to create a syrup, then added it to some sparkling water. Really very refreshing.

Anyone have any other recipes?

I bet it is! I am impressed -- where do you get quinine, and frankly, are you ensuring that the dose you are giving yourself is sufficiently minor? It is a medicine, after all.

The quinine comes in the form of powdered cinchona bark. I got it at herbspro.com. I saw the recipe in the Washington Post, so I'm assuming I won't kill myself with it!

It never ceases to amaze me the things people decide to try to do or make themselves. Not in a million years would I sit drinking my gin and tonic and think "Hmmm, you know what would make this better? If I made my own tonic water!"

I've had homemade tonic water but I didn't make it. I had it at Per Se in NYC.

I'm weird like that. But actually, it was a pretty simple process, and it really does taste better.

Now I just have to figure out how to make my own gin.

All of the commercial brands I've tried (Schweppes, Canada Dry, various house brands) have been sugary to the point of being sickening. I imagine yours must be much better.

On a side note, I think I may be intolerant of quinine. Is this fairly common? I drink one tonic drink or Brio and my lips burn and redden.
