I got Staph (and I have pretty feet)...

For any cut or brushburn MAKE SURE you treat it immed to keep it from getting infected. I recently started BJJ/Sambo in addition to Muay Thai (as I have no ground game whatsoever) and I ended up with matburn. All of it healed except for one spot which became infected with Staph. You can get Staph infection anywhere, not just at the or from the Gym. It actually lives on your skin and it can enter your body through any open sore. As you can see, the infection started just below my big toe and moved up to my ankle. This is actually better than it was as my meds are kicking in (I can actually see my ankle bones on my left foot again! ) Staph infection, if untreated, will spread VERY quickly and can do LOTS of damage. I was thinking about waiting a week or two to get seen by my Doc because my benefits don't kick in until July 1st, but I decided against it. Mostly because it was getting worse and it HURTS LIKE HELL! My Doctor said that if I would have waited another week I would've ended up in the Hospital.

No thanks. Sorry to hear about the infection but thanks for the warning.

What you got is cellulitis from possibly a Staph infection. Staph, by the way, is a bacteria, not a virus.

so how do you like sambo?

Good to know. I got some mat burn from BJJ as well. I'll be sure to disinfect with alcohol or H2O2 on all those burns. How long did it take for the staph to become noticeable?

I like whatever it is I'm doing. I don't know enough about the different styles to know what I'm doing. I think the instructer mixes sambo with BJJ. They had a clinic with Andrei Arlovski not too long ago) It always looked boring but I wanted to try it because I have absolutely no defense if I ever get tackled or pulled to the ground but I really love it. It def requires thinking and is much more difficult than I thought! Great workout! They also don't officially do Muay Thai but a mix of kickboxing, San Shou, and Muay Thai. I really want to learn some of the throws from San Shou.

Hmmmm. It probably took about 5 days until I def knew something was wrong and the swelling was pretty bad. Most of it was ok except for one spot where I noticed some pus and then, like I said, after about 5 days my foot blew up. I would imagine that something like Neosporine right after practice, NuSkin, or my instructor has some kind of cream or ointment that he puts on after practice to kill all of the germs, would prevent this from happening.

Generally, shower immediately after practice if possible. If not, most gyms should have a bottle of rubbing alcohol in a bottle to spray on yourself.

There used to be some foul smelling anti-bacterial/fungal etc. stuff that we had to put on before wrestling practice called Kinshield or something like that. Also there are a lot of shower soaps designed for wrestling as well.

Watch out for that cauliflower ear! Pretty nasty stuff.

you can put tea tree oil, you can buy some from walmart. BUT it smells HORRIBLE. RIDICULOUSLY HORRIBLE. it'll remove the surface bacteria so it doesnt spread or get any bigger and itll help with the swelling.

be careful not to scratch your face if you touch your feet. you can end up getting folliculitis.

My foot got infected once when I dropped a arcade game (I delivered them when I was in school) on my shin, down to the bone. Like the moron that I was, I played two ice hockey games on it and coached my pee-wee team too. Needless to say, it got infected and it was a big mess. The doctor said I could've lost part of my leg. Scary shit, man.
