I dont think I have ever seen anyone IRL besides maybe goths wearing leather coats, is it possible to wear them in a more casual way without looking like you are going to shoot up a school

I always felt leather coats like that made me (and probably anyone else who wore them) look like an agent of the secret police in some communist-dominated central European country circa 1948!

Alternatively, a few years earlier, a member of the 'Gestapo' (Secret State Police) in Nazi-Germany.

The one Brad Pitt wore in Oceans (Thirteen?) was kinda cool. But I'm note sure about real life..

Well, if you are Brad Pitt, you can get away with wearing almost anything.
Concerning the coats: they do make you look funny. I think I'd prefer an oilskin coat.

In my opinion, it purely depends on what you wear it with. If paired with some good jeans and a funky knit/t-shirt, it can work quite well, as long as the leather trench isn't black. When you wear a leather trench with formal wear, or black slacks, it can look a bit Matrix/Mass Murderer. I feel the length of the trench also plays a big part, please avoid wearing any leather trenches similar to the leather one featured in the Chanel Paris-Londres collection. With casual wear, this Balenciaga leather trench would look quite cool:

In general, this look is so associated with the Nazis it's ruined for everyone. But I agree that the shorter the coat, the less it looks like a trench coat (i.e. Nazi-ish), the more acceptable it is.

Ive always loved the look of the long leather trench, but have never worn one or purchased one because its image is associated with
a. the SS
b. the trench coat mafia of Columbine HS
c. Style was in in my neighborhood in the 80's

You could pick up full length ex-military German leather trench coast quite cheaply in English markets in the 70s. Quite a few of us students wore them as a kind of ironic statement with our post-hippie outfits. When my son started admiring it I gave it away to a tramp. I don't think you can wear them today.

Peacoat style, just longer. Case by case basis. Brown shades would probably also help avoid the psycho look.
