Kitchen essentials

I'll be moving into my own apartment in Columbus this fall. Aside from other things, I will need the basic items that comprise a "kitchen." Utensils, essential spices, etc. Can anyone recommend a list? Or make up a quick list? Thanks in advance.

Utensils; IKEA has a rather good (and cheap) "starter kit". It's a good basis, - it seems like every other student in Europe buys them.

...if you can find a restaurant supply store, you're in luck. What I use:

equipment:
8" chef's knife
paring knife (Both knives Forshner/Victorinox, sturdy, great edge, inexpensive)
8" stainless fry-pan (Vollrath)
add a 10" fry pan if your stove has big enough burners
8" cast-iron skillet (Lodge)
tongs
spatula
Microwave
wire whisk
cutting sheets

spices:
salt
pepper
basil

cookbooks:
America's Test Kitchen Cookbook, or any of the Best Recipe Series.

Best single statement so far: shop at a restaraunt supply store. Better stuff, cheaper prices.

Agree on most stuff:

Chef's knife (I'm a global guy)
Microwave (get one with lazy susan)
Toaster Oven (get a double high one, fits a chicken easily. Great for re-heating pizza).
Cutting sheets/boards
tongs, spatulas, etc.
Large and small stainless steel sautee pans
Large and small covered stainless pots.
Bread machine (some will scoff. Not expensive, works great, great product, cheap to make bread, makes place smell excellent)

spices:
sea salt
kosher salt
regular Epsom salt
ground black pepper
also a pepper mill
cummin
zhattar
parsley
oregano
thyme
chili powder

Let's be honest guys, this is Conne. The only thing he really needs to stock his kitchen is a cocktail shaker.

That Reminds me!!! Since we're talking about enameled cast-iron pill-box hats...

Ask your granny - or any old relative or semi-relative or friendly passer - by if they have any of that old, heavy cookware they no longer use. Generally speaking, that stuff rocks. I scored a Belgian cast iron dutch oven that works brilliantly for chicken or pot roast or soups or stews. Bonus points if its free.

A cast-iron griddle or skillet will cook a fantastic steak or pancakes, provided you season it properly.

Ask away!

And if you opt for the pill-box hat, get the matching feather boa.
