This is so totally freakin' cool: BMW's concept car uses fabric as an outer skin allowing the car to do things not possible with metal. It seems to be the ultimate answer to Chris Bangle's flame surfacing concept. I think the BMW designers had a little fun naming the car as well, which may be apparent after you see how the engine bay is accessed. Also some clothing analogies in the video. The still picture are a little creepy though: http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/10/b...odel-revealed/ --Andre

what do they mean by skin? i understand there is a metal frame, but if you are side-swiped while driving that car is there nothing between you and the other car but fabric?

It's a spaceframe construction, which is how almost all purpose-built racecars are built. The skin doesn't serve a structural function in that kind of design. In racecars, the skin is there only for aerodynamics, and is commonly made of very thin plastic. In the GINA, it's cloth, and it seems to serve several functions.

Spaceframes can be built to very high safety standards.

BMW ******. Are they serious with that name? It looks sick though. I love the concept.

I had the displeasure of seeing him speak at a design talk a few years ago at the LA Auto Show... what he wears is even worse.

Haha, actually he had a giant tie clip that resembled a silver splotch which is all I could focus on. I should dig through my photo back-ups and find a photo of him that I took. I was more impressed by Stefan Sielaff, the Audi designer, from this past year's show... brown shoes and a pocket square.

I'm trying to remember, but I think Bangle had on a black jeans with black cowboy boots and one of those southwestern silver tipped belts:

So that son-of-a-***** Bangle designs his outfits like he tries to design Bimmers: a hodge-podge of lines and colors that have nothing to do with each other.
