Screwed up laptop

Okay, somehow tonight as I was about to go to sleep I managed to break my laptop. To be precise its the DVD drive.

There're no bulbs in my room now and I was setting the laptop down on the floors from my bed as I was going to try to sleep. Somehow, the DVD drive opened and bent as I set it down. The light was blinking as it normally does when it opens so maybe it still functions. The problem is it was dislodged from one of the long metal shafts it slides on to open and close. I managed to fit it back into the shaft, but the next issue is that I guess when it was dislodged a part of the plastic cut and has now created a barrier preventing it from closing (as you can imaging it's a very tight fit). I believe I have a warranty through office depot (forget if it covers accidental damage) but can't look at it any time soon as the paperwork from the purchase (back in fall 06) is in a different town. So I'll just call them to ask what type of coverage I have.

Otherwise, anything else I can do? Is this more or less a $300 fix which I should just skip (after finding some way to close or remove the drive) and buy an external one? It will really suck having my disc drive open like this for an extended period of time.

Sounds like you can just find another drive and pop it in there. There are plenty on ebay for cheap.

I spoke to office depot a few moments after the post and turns out my service plan is still valid (for a few more months). Nothing on their webpage mentioned accidental damage (coverage or lack thereof) and I was afraid to ask. They are sending me a box to ship the machine to them.

Careful - they don't ask beforehand because they usually include some "if it arrives, and we find that you caused the damage, we are going to charge you $50 for the inspection" clause that screws you over.

You can buy a new, generic DVD drive for cheap (like $50 or less) and it should work just fine. You may have to use the proprietary connector/housing, depending on the brand but it's an easy replacement and can be done with a small screw driver.

I noticed you are in MD, so am I and I've done this type of repair dozens of times so if you have any questions, let me know.

surely they have to prove you stood on it, I'd just say it got stuck and I used a little force to pull out a cd i needed for work..
