West Village restaurant - Smith's or Bobo

I need to host a few out-of-towners and am looking for a W. Village restaurant. Anyone been to either Smith's or Bobo? Food? Experience?

Thanks,

Blue Hill

Never been to Bobo (didn't they lose their chef though?) but I don't think that Smith's deserves the two NYmag stars. Wife and I were disappointed by the bland food and poor service. The menu looks fantastic and reads like a poem but is poorly executed.

I'd second the Blue Hill recommendation but I think it's a bit more expensive than the two you mentioned. Mas also falls in that category - really nice dining experience though.

For unpretentious but solid cuisine, AOC Bedford is always safe, Salt (a block south of Smith's) is a nice little neighborhood restaurant.

Salt is good. I've been 2x; but, the last time I went it was VERY loud. Like people yelling over the blaring music.

Thanks, boys.

Bobo looks like a cool space, but Salt may be the experience they're after.

Re: Salt
You may have to sit at the communal table next to people you don't know.

If you go to Salt and they still have the beet and blue cheese appetizer, you have to get that !

Oh man, so many choices here in WV

Don't have time to go into detail on each one right now, but some of my favorites are:

Vento
El Faro
Picciolo Angelo
Matador

I vote for P*Ong. Tasting menu is good stuff. Also have a "vegetarian" cocktail with celery infused vodka that was oddly delicious.

Excellent point. Since I generally hate people, that could prove a problem.

Depending on the size of your party, you can specify that when you make your reservation
(not the fact that you hate people, but that you don't want to be at one of the two communal tables)

Bobo is much better than Smith's. Food and decor are both much better. Service is equal between the two. Bobo has a better scene. If going to Smith's, go to the bar room.

They lost their original chef in December

But was replaced by two chefs who apparently are better (one is from Hearth)

It's a win all around, then. Bobo it is.

Thanks,
