Yeah, the first half is kind of slow and a bit repetitive.

Things pick up when Sledge (aka, "Sledgehammer") ships off to war. His story turns out to be extremely compelling.

I think they made a mistake focusing on three characters in different units. Except for the early Guadalcanal scenes, it makes the switch up between them too jarring and hampers their development. With BoB we followed one unit of soldiers from D-Day on through the end of the war. But The Pacific jumps around a lot and isn't nearly as cohesive of a story.
