It is sort of an evolutionary concept of conservation when the body becomes accustomed to a certain activity. Someone could probably give you a more scientific answer..

I sort of get it. Like when your body gets accustomed to doing that much activity, then stopping all of a sudden or cutting back then the metabolism will also cut down. At least that's what I think you're trying to say.

Reviving this. I've started running again and I've decided that interval training might be the best way for me to start for a couple of reasons:

1. I still find running very boring, and it seems that if I throw in a quick 1/4 mile, it livens up my runs.
2. Since I find running boring, I don't want to spend more than 30 minutes running at a time right now.

I do eventually want to run longer distances, too.

My current makeshift interval running plan is to jog 3/4 mile at a 9:30 pace, then run a 1/4 at a 7:00 pace. I then jog another 3/4 at a 9:30 pace, and then run a 1/4 at 6:30 and then end my work out with a cool down walk. I was thinking that it may be worthwhile to shorten the amount I jog to a 1/2 mile and try to throw in another 1/4 mile at a higher pace.

If anyone has any ideas of how to tweak this plan, I'd be glad to hear them. I just read some stuff on tempo runs - perhaps this is something I could throw in there as well? These workouts seem to fit well with treadmill training, too.

you can also try to liven up your runs to make them less boring. Like opera, audio books, podcasts. I usually sample new music from radio stations that I record over night, or use long runs to finally listen to an appreciable chunk of an opera uninterrupted.

Also, as was suggested, running and then going for a swim right after is fantastic. The image of jumping into cool water is good motivation, and it taxes different muscle groups. Maybe you can run+sprint to the next public swimming place / lake / ocean, go for a swim, then do a very slow jog on the way back? That's varied, burns a ton of calories, and builds your strength as well.

I know it's not the most groundbreaking advice, but maybe it helps

That being said, the best advice in this thread is "less reading, more running!" anyway.
