This is an absolutely huge topic here at the moment in South Korea. I've heard all kinds of opinions about the topic; most of it, from what I can tell, is purely misinformation about the dangers of mad cow disease and the details of what is going on. All of my students, of any age, are all aware of the recent lift on the trade embargo where in South Korea will now begin accepting beef from America. The extent of their knowledgeability on the topic seems to range from uninformed, to patently false information about mad cow disease and Americna beef. "Teacher, you eat American beef?" I hear that question almost every damn day. I have students who won't talk about mad cow disease because they're afraid of offending me, and I have students who HATE AMERICA!!!!!! because of the whole ordeal. The deal is that South Korea will be accepting beef which has been slaughtered up to 30 months ago, and therein is the crux of the issue - that the president of Korea is allowing the importing of beef that no other country, not even a developing country like Vietnam, will accept. Of course, by and large, American beef is completely acceptable, cheap and delicious, but the amount of propaganda and misinformation on this topic has reached so far that most of my students are wondering how on earth I don't have mad cow disease yet, being that I grew up eating this tainted American beef. Thankfully, the more informed people I've spoke with, including some people who just came off the protest line around city hall, have a much more nuanced perspective on it. They're fed up with the feeling of betrayal by their president in buying this 30-month-old beef. Unfortunately, this seems to be an issue of the informed minority - the majority still thinks that all US beef is bad.
