And get kicked out of the bar. You enjoy the hospitality of the bar or night club with all its facilities and the only way for the venue to continue to exist is by selling drinks. It's akin to bringing your own steak to a restaurant.

I don't feel like paying hiked-up prices for watered-down drinks.

This might fly at a restaurant or cafe though.

I was hanging out at a buddy's bar in Atlanta one night when he kicked out a guy who had brought in his own 6 pack in a backpack.

The idiot had brought in cans of Icehouse. The bar served neither Icehouse or cans.

I agree with both LK and Kav. So what I do is rarely drink cocktails out, and only in establishments that understand them. For the priviledge, I pay dearly. In other places I merely drink scotch and water or wine. Easy that way. LK, if you haven't looked over eGullet's cocktail forum to see what establishments you might have in your area that understand a good drink, please do. ~ Huntsman

That's too obvious.

Most of the non-dive places in west LA charge:

$6 for a pint of whatever's on tap
$5-7 for a bottle of your average beer - Stella, Bud, Corona
$9 for a jack&coke / g&t / etc
$10-17 for a martini / specialty cocktail, etc

Prices here suck ass. Even the divebars are generally busy enough with hipsters that they can still get away with charging higher prices.

I live in Montreal and I just paid $8 for a pint at an Irish bar downtown.
  • $4-6 for a bottle of domestic.
  • $7-8 for a mixed drink
  • $9-10 for a cocktail
