My month on e-bay

Thread Starter
A while back, I mentioned that I hadn't bought many suits for the past couple of years and it was time to load up the closet. Now I thought I'd bring everyone up to date on the past month or so that I've been buying suits on e-bay. 3 great suits, 1 Ok suit and 1 mistake. The three great suits include 2 by Oxxford (charcoal glen plaid and a navy pinstripe) and 1 by Brooks Bros. ("Hand Tailored" label, charcoal with narrow-set pinstripes). The Oxxford suits cost $160 and $150 respectively. The Brooks Brothers was $120. The OK suit is a solid medium gray flannel by Hickey Freeman ($80). The mistake is a navy Hickey Freeman ($60)--it came with an incredibly high waist. If I wear it I'll look like the old guys sitting outside the drugstore in my hometown. Alterations cost me about $180 total (jackets and trousers let out, sleeves taken up and down--the Hickey Freeman suits came from someone who had incredibly short arms). So, my total investment is $750, my closet is restocked, and my wife hasn't been too upset.

Those are some pretty good deals you got. How about this one I got not too long ago? Oxxford It is in fact an Oxxford suit from Bauman's, rather than "OXFORD CLOTHES FROM BAUMAUS"  It pays to look for ignorant sellers.  As you can see there's virtually no description, and the picture is horrible.  The suit was manufactered in 1992, but there's absolutely no signs of wear at all.  Must have been in storage somewhere for 12 years.   BTW, this is the first Oxxford suit I've seen in person.  The handwork, especially in the lapels is impressive.

Nice. There are regularly amazingly good deals to be had on EBay on Oxxford. I've bought 5 or 6 pairs of used Oxxford slacks on EBay and never paid more than $85 or so. (For perspective, yesterday I was a Neimans and all their Oxxford slacks have original retail of $595; currently on sale for $385 or so.) I've also bought 4 or 5 Oxxford sportcoats and one Oxxford suit. Just like the slacks, all needed minor tailoring, but all were amazing bargains -- the suit was $199 (BIN) and the blazers were all in the $90-$225 range. Keep an eye out for used Oxxford cashmere blazers -- these sell for about $3,000 new, but can be found on Ebay for under $300.

The misspelling that amazes me the most is using "Paul Stewart" instead of what the label clearly says -- "Paul Stuart".

I've bought about 5 Oxxford suits on ebay, with prices ranging from $30 to 120, some of them NWT, some of them of 1990s vintage, still quite nice for the price.

Trying to get a feel for what different suits "should" go for--$199 is a great deal for Oxxford?  I assume that's NWT? Too slow, drizzt beat me to it. There seem to be a few out there for more like $120 BIN right now. Tom

There are some that have a starting bid price of very cheap, but those I have to assume are more likely to have some defect(s). If someone is selling a NWT Oxxford suit for anything less than $400 or so, I just have to think that there's something fishy about. Most go for closer to $600+. Oxxford suits retail for over $2,200, and can't be found at Filene's Basement for less than about $700. Now, "like new" Oxxford is a different story. The suit I bought for $199 was a "like new" suit -- it showed no wear at all, so I think I got a pretty good deal. In sum, with Oxxford, I think in terms of how much these items sold for when new at retail -- blazers start around $1400 and suits start around $2200 or so. So, when you can get these for 10% of original retail, it seems to me like a pretty darn good deal.

I got a dark medium grey flat front NWT Oxxford for $120, but the issue with it was it was listed as Oxford and had very little description, so not many bidders, better for me i guess

eBay is evil.  The combination of great deals and competitive bidding has turned me into Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, wildly overpaying for things I don't need.

I'm too picky and generally afraid of anything that is not NWT. I don't get the best deals but have never bought anything I can't use. An Oxxford gray pants example is this recent purchase:http://<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/......MEWA:IT</a>
