TUT = time under tension. It's a concept that has a merit of truth to it...but the thought behind the growth stimulus is incorrect and training with the method is sloppy and not very beneficial beyond newbie gains or roids.
It worked for you...but so would a lot of other things.
If a muscle responds to the time it's under tension (wrong, but go with me on this) then spending 30 seconds on each rep or 30 seconds on each set should do the same thing. The difference is that more strength will be created through the concentric (lifting) portion of the lift that generally won't be facilitated by the negative (lowering) part of the lift.
Long story short: hypertrophy responses are best proxied by total workload (ie. work done in a given amount of time -- usually a week to week basis).
It's kinda technical, but just trust me that you'd be better off just doing more sets with a higher weight.
